I just joined, was looking through but didn't see what I was looking for. I was looking for a picture of a 12 X 24 spot to get a feel of how big it would be. I have a larger building but am thinking of that space to set off for heated winter work area. I would enter through the 12 ft. wall and the space would be 24 Ft deep.

Welcome to the site! It depends on what you're planning to do in that 12x24 space - are you working on a car, truck, motorcycle, or? I used to have a 12x24 garage and it was pretty tight for working on my '61 Bonneville but it was adequate for a smaller car. On the plus side, if it's well insulated it should be pretty easy to keep warm.

I would say unless you want to go outside to change your mind 18X24 would be a minimum for a single project .

Why not just go tape off that size area in your garage & feel it for yourself.
My delima, keeping the better half happy with a rec room and still have space for me to wrench on cars in the winter. I have a 28 X 58 building which had an apartment built across the back half. I was using the other part as my garage but with 15 ft. ceilings it's hard to heat. The apartment is now empty (for good) so that's the space I'm working with.
That space has a bathroom in far left corner so it isn't going to be deep enough to pull a car in. I figure I could split it in half and use the right side which woul give me those deminsions I posted. I could go wider but at the cost of the rec room if you know what I meen..lol

OK heres a thought put a wall in the garage part that you are using to seperate the space and put a drop ceiling on that part . That way the financial advisor keeps her rec room and you have a smaller space thats easier to heat but not so small you cant turn around . Would swade41 be refering to a flat pigmented car of 41 vintage

12" is NARROW.
A typical pickup is more than 7' wide. closer to 8' with mirrors. That gives you 2 feet of working room on both sides. No thanks!

Are you talking about inside measurements or outside?
If it is outside you can cut off a foot off of the measurements for the width and depth for the walls.
If that is all the space you have to work with than it is better than none. But as others have said before in other topics build it as big as you can go.

I have a 17x21' garage and it's enough for one car and some room to work. I'm also building a shed for the garden tools and I have a big basement for storage. Nothing goes in the garage except the car that I'm working on, my tools, and the bench.
See if you can get a few more feet in width - that would help a lot.

The reason I want to use the apartment part of the garage to work out of is because it does have those dropped ceilings allready. The measurements I gave are inside demensions.
This is what I thought I could do, put a single garage door in the outer wall of the apartment, which is still inside the main building. Then drive through the main building into this insulated,heated work space. My other option is to divide the apartment across at the bathroom wall. This would give me a space of 15 X 24 but it would be across and not deep like the other.

Well now that looks like a 41 chebby pickem up with some extensive work done to the front end unless of course thats a glass front end. I would say 15 X24 would be better but it would be more fun to get into that way prolly have to get the vehicle half in then start sliding it sideways on dollys or something.

I was thinking about how to swing the front around once it was in, that's why I was leaning towards the straight drive through on the right side. I'm going to have to go string some lines inside the rec room part to see what we can live with. The only limiting factor on that side is the width of the bathroom, but I think it neds to be bigger than a bathroom..lol
The truck is one thing I want to get some work done to this winter, I've been fabing up the bed as of late.

I know guys who built cars in single car garages under apartments that were not even 12 wide and were not 24 deep. I've helped in some of them, and like everything else in the world you make do with what you've got.
But, it is not fun, and it is not comfortable. You wind up doing triage on tools, etc., and if you don't absolutely need it in there that day to do that days' work, it goes someplace else.
If you are okay with that going in, and know you have no choice but to **** it up and live with it, then there ya are. I started with a 20x22, then in 1988we added on & remodeled and that space became our bedroom and I got a new20x30 space that I thought was all I'd ever need.

I just added a 24x30 wing to that 20x30, making a total of 1320 sq. ft., and it would have been larger were it not for a mountain in the way and a lack of $ to make any more of it disappear.

I have a diagram of my 10x21 (search for 10x21). Its tight, but its what i have I can pull in my impreza, put it up on stands, and work under it. I had enough room to go around the the sides for detailing paint.
My car is pretty small, I dont think a big truck would be able to pull in and do any work. I see garage pics with an extra two feet on the sides... and think, wow! thats got a lot of space
