Two uses, perhaps...

1. Years ago, it was common to switch both sides (hot and neutral) on some circuits. My table saw has a similar switch, 120 volts, double pole. There was a time when the concept of neutral and hot didn't really exist for a lot of residential installations (many houses were wired with a single 120 volt feed, no 240 volts).

2. They could be used to switch two 15 amp circuits, such as turning on a lot of lights at one time?

(hey, I made that last one up...)

It's a Despard type switch, & fairly rare (expensive) now.
