Looking for a 120v garage heater as I don't have 220 that runs to my garage. My garage is about 500 sq feet. Is there anything out there that is on 120 I could use to at least warm up my garage warm enough to work in it during the winter months in Michigan? Thanks for any help.

If its extremely well insulated and sealed, sure. An oil filled space heater would work. I doubt its extremely well insulated and sealed however as very few are. Also a heater that size even if it was well insulated would have to be turned on a day or two in advance, some something you would just turn on when you wanted to work in your garage. For that you would need a much bigger heater, either 220 or propane/natural gas.

Another note, if you had just one circuit to your garage as many do, you would probably need to shut off the heater before running table saws, compressors, and other heavy duty tools or you would trip the breaker.

About 1500w is the max for 120V. That's about 5000 BTU. I'll run for a good long while even if the building is insulated and tight.

Is it attached to the house, could open door and run a fan to get it started and add a 1500 watt ceramic heater or a radiant type near where you are working will make you feel warmer.

if find this type provide the most air heating potential.

You can get a 50k BTU hanging heater that runs on 120v with a 100lb propane tank outside of the shop. would be overkill but it should work nicely.

I am kind of doubtful it puts out enough BTU to heat up a 500 sq ft garage, you may get a 1-2 degree rise after running a long time but it may not be the result you are looking for, if you get a heatdish type heater to radiate the heat onto yourself it may be more effecient.
