Wondering if it wasn't the GFI at all.
Thinking of switching the outlet out.

A bad outlet will not cause a GFCI to trip.
You are missing basic troubleshooting steps here and your jerry rigging doesnt help either

I've got a GFCI circuit in the garage loft bathroom that goes completely berzerk when I key up the transmitter on my ham radio. They are not even on the same circuit. The GFCI device will clatter like a machine gun. Must be sensitive to the radio frequency emission. An arc welder does make some RF noise. Could be related.
