12pt fasteners question

So most 12pt fasteners, either bolts or nuts, almost all have some type of flange on the bottom of the drive region, correct?

And in most installations for 12pt fasteners, there would be little need for deep sockets compared to 6pt fasteners right?

Therefore if one was to get 12pt and 6pt sockets, one in standard length, one in deep, it would better to get the 12pt in standard length and 6pt in deep.

I come from off road fabrication and 12 points are used a lot on suspension parts I have never need a deep in all my travels

I had some 12pt fasteners on the front end of a 94 Ram 4x4 the other day. They were 14mm and couldn't be accessed with a deep socket. Shallow sockets were the rule of the day to bust them loose.

When you say 12 point fasteners, are you talking about like ARP bolts/nuts? Because almost every ARP head stud I have ever installed I have needed to use a deep socket. 1- to reach it down in the head. And 2- to clear the stud sticking up through the nut.

Certainly that's an application of interest. The reaching down into the head can be accomplished with an extension. Clearing the stud sticking up through the nut would require the stud being too long, which it shouldn't be that long. If you're using ARP stuff they are usually designed properly and shouldn't be that long. But I could be wrong so your experience is welcomed.

well, 12pt bolt head, shallow obviously would suffice. but when you are messin with 12pt nuts, which isnt often unless you are doing rebuilds a lot, 12pt deeps would be needed on occasion. sometimes studs stick up a little bit. i prefer to use a deep over a shallow and a 1.5" or 3" extension most all the time.

although, 98.5% of the time, your system mentioned above would work fine.

but who, in their right mind, would not want full sets of each? just sayin!
