My 14.4 V porter cable cordless hammer drill just died. It was about 12-13 years old. I was totally satisfied with the power of that drill.

In that time I have probably only used the hammer drill feature 3-4 times. I can borrow a hammerdrill if I need one.

I have an old corded makita if I have to drill 100 1/2 holes.

I am a typical homeowner, not doing a ton of projects.

Good enough? Don't really want to blow $250 on the 18V version. Other option would be a higher volt, not lithium, not brushless cordless..

The M12 will blow your porter cable out the water. It can probably beat none brushless 18v

Since you have a corded drill to fall back to for those rare moments you need more power, then yes, that's not a half bad idea.

My 18V brushless Milwaukee actually feels like it has more torque than my 7.8A corded DeWalt. No kidding.

Sure, the 12V won't have that kind of raw power, but if you were happy with the power from your 14.4V NiCd, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much power they're squeezing out of 12V now, and how amazingly light they are.
