The post floating around about lug nuts got me thinking. Does anyone carry around a 12v corded 1/2” (plugs into cigarette lighter socket) impact gun, mainly for lug nut removal/emergency tire service?

I keep a dedicated breaker bar and socket for each vehicle. I wouldn't trust one of those things in an emergency.

I am curious if they actually work though.

I think I saw it posted on this site but they make a funky 12v corded impact that spins up a flywheel. It's slow but seems to hit decently hard. Saw some video where they claimed it would remove Honda crank bolts :ROFLMAO:

The 12v corded impacts that looks like a traditional impact have really low torque ratings. I've never used either type

I too would go with 1/2" breaker bar of suitable length, or a 4-Way lug nut wrench. There are also non-swivel head fixed lug nut wrenches w/ 2-3 flip-flop L nut sockets available at reasonable prices.

I bought one for the first wife way back when. It was a terrible ************* and it wasn't cheap if I remember correctly. I do recall it spun up an internal flywheel. It wouldn't remove the lug nuts off of the 2007 malibu that had just been torqued to 100ft/lbs.

HF carried a cheap 12v cigarette plug corded 'impact gun' for a short period of time. Said tool is no longer offered by HF.

Cordless impact gun from a reputable/major manufacturer will do better than any of the 12 volt cigarette lighter models I’ve seen.

I showed my wife how to use the Stubby M12 1/2" to take off her lug nuts.
Also use to raise the jack.
She drives around with it at all times.

I acquired a corded one from somewhere, I threw it in the camper just in case. Although when we take the camper any distance I throw my Milwaukee impact in just in case so I could just throw that thing out.

For a roadside emergency kind of thing, I'd never replace a breaker bar and a socket with an impact as the sole means available (for me or my wife).

When I travel in my vintage car, I always have a fair number of tools with me, including one of my battery impacts.

Rechargeable have to be regularly recharged so they are not good to throw in the vehicle for emergencies. I wouldn't trust the 12v plug I. Ones either. But isf I really wanted one, I'd at least carry a breaker bar and a socket or just the original lug wrench. Something reliable.
