12v power supply switching question.

I bought this 50 amp 12vdc power supply to run a 12vdc hose reel that I bought cheap. It is going to have 200’ of air hose on it, but will not likely be a daily use thing right now. So I wired it up using the existing switch on the 12 volt side to power the reel, and a cord and plug to power the unit with a/c, and it works as expected. Since this is not going to be a daily use thing I was curious as to how to power and switch it though. Should I bypass The existing 12 volt switch, and just switch the a/c side, or should I switch the a/c side and leave the 12 volt switch in the circuit?

That thing probably has a POS switch that will be junk sooner than later. Just put a switch in for the 120 and leave the power supply switch on. Or put a cord on it and unplug it when you're not using it.

You might have to do both switch the ac side then the dc side. But all dependents on your motor. That is due to the in rush current might kill the mosfet when you first turn on the unit there was an explaination to this deep in YouTube somewhere. I think it is in induction heater videos or soft start switch videos.

Gottcha, I’ll just put a switch on the outlet, and keep the 12 volt switch to operate it.

The next thing that comes to mind is, does the motor need to be run in both directions? If that's the plan, you need to have some way of switching the polarity (wire hook up) going to the motor.

Yea you need a PWM speed controller from Ebay/Amazon , not two switches for that if you wanted speed control and reversible.. Don't forget your fuse.

if you just want it reversible then a DPDT Center off Switch on the DC side. but at 50AMP ? not sure if it would be cheaper.

I have a few PWM controller, they all work but the back trace for the power to the motor on the cheaper ones are thinner, so might be able to handle the claimed 60AMP, probably just for fractions of a second. so cheaper one might not be that good. That is eBay for you some times.
