20amp circuits, but from the switch up to the actual can lights (6 4" per switch) can I just run 14/2? Up to the switch I have run 12/2.

I've got a bundle of 14/2 so trying to use it up. All the outlets on the same room circuit are on 12/2. These will be LED inserts into 4" cans. Also, planning to do retrofit cans, and just leave wire bundles in the attic. That way I can get the sheetrock up, throw a laser line up and get them all cut in with the hole saw, on the line. get back in the attic and make the connections.

If you did that, you would have to change the breaker to 15 amps. For a 20 amp circuit, all the building wiring has to be #12

+1 Just go with 15A circuits for lighting. You'll be much happier using 14 wire in the can's boxes.

Agree with everyone else. I wired my whole house and used 12 gauge for all outlets, and 14 for all lights. 14 is much easier to work with. I'm also pretty sure I could've put the whole house on one 15 amp lighting circuit (every light in the house is LED), but I split it up just for convenience sake.
