Looking for storage opinions & ideas. I will have 14' high ceilings and i am looking at purchasing a set of these.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/NewAge-P...Cabinet-Set-in-Black-14-Piece-53610/301617676

However, it will not be nearly tall enough.

My other option would be to buy some pallet racks and install a barn style sliding door on a track to make it somewhat attractive. Any ideas. Wall storage will be 30'x 14' tall depth is optional.

Do not want to break the bank, my limit would be around 2k.

One can build a lot of storage for way less than $2K. It would also have the advantage of fitting your needs rather than you having to adjust to its design.

I do not know your location, but take a look at https://hgrinc.com/ and see what they have for storage. I'd also use Search Tempest to find what is available in your neck of the woods, say within 200 to 250 miles. 200 to 250 miles makes picking up a purchase a reasonable day trip.

See if there is a Habitat Restore around as one can find lots of useful & reusable merchandise. You also are helping out a good cause.

Around here there is an independent maker who sells cabinets, etc much lower than the big box stores. You may also have one in the area. They can sell for less as their shipping costs are so much lower.

Pallet racking is also a good idea.

Unless you are building a garage/shop to also be used for entertainment I'd substitute muslin/canvas, etc curtains. They'd be a whole lot less expensive than sliding track doors.

Just my 2 cents.

I'd buy some used pallet racking and possibly use in up higher with a workbench and cabinets below. Having a $2k budget gives you a lot to play with if you can do some building yourself.

I guess i will look for some pallet racks, and look for some additional tool storage, tools are over flowing my current boxes.

I like the barn door panel so i do not have to look at open shelving and it looks alot cleaner, well makes the wife happy, this is what i am thinking on a larger scale. Have three tracks and floor guides, keep things nice and tidy.

Food for thought:

The other nice thing about pallet racks and free standing cabinets is you can take them with you when you move.

Any custom built solutions attached to the building are defined as part of the building... and your return on investment will be pennies on the dollar when you sell.

That is very true, but i do not plan on moving anytime soon, and if we do move, we will always keep this house in Los Angeles.

I have the same height problem(?)

I don't want to go with pallet racking because they are too deep.
I want them about half their depth.
Are any made that way?

My suggestion is to start by listing the things you want to store. I do a lot of automotive work, so I need 24" deep sturdy shelves, which I made from ¾" plywood with 1x3 bracing and 2x4's for posts. If you have a lot of tools, invest in some Stanley Vidmar cabinets or similar. Since you have 14' ceilings, consider a 4-post rack to store another car, and that will also give you access to cabinets all the way to the ceiling.

I went with pallet rack and haven't looked back. I have my milling machine, lathe, drill presses and other machines on the floor with the bottom shelf at 6'(I'm short) above them. More storage above that on the top shelf. The other side of my shop has another pallet rack with a tanker desk and file cabinets below, shelving above so there is no wasted floor space.

What is the depth of that rack?

Personally I much prefer 2' deep shelves, and I own a fork lift. Depending on the geometry, the cheapest option may also be the best, and that is simply to stick build shelves out of framing lumber. You gotta ask what do you really gain by using pallet racks, other than the danger of a cascade failure. I bought a big pile of gondola shelving when Montgomery Wards shut down, and it's nice, but I would prefer 2' depth over what I have on that. You won't have any trouble finding used gondola shelving, thanks to Amazon.

I would either build shelves or go w pallet racking...this will give you great use of your vertical space and you can design it around your needs. I was in the same boat and built 2 different sets of shelving that are out of the direct walk way and drive path and allow me great use of my space all the way to the ceiling. I use tons of plastic storage bins to get little used items up out of the way.:beer:

Pallet rack comes in a variety of depths. I have seen 24", 36", 42", and 48" offered.

I have a 14' ceiling in my shop, and i resisted the pallet racking idea for a long time, but finally gave in and bought some. I wouldn't go with anything else ever again. It's like legos for gearheads. Just do it. I have 36 and 30" deep racking.

I have 2 42" units and one 26" unit of pallet racking in my garage. You can put SO MUCH stuff on them, but it is really best for big stuff.

It is a super solid base for workbench, but mine are too deep. Will make a inset workbench one day. Tool boxes will roll into left over cavity when not in use.

Mine go right to vaulted ceiling right now, so makes lighting a small problem.

If storing small stuff, even if in bins, it is a pain to move stuff around and get things 10 and 12 feet in the air.

I might make some pulley systems to lift up table and radial arm saws when not in use. Plan to haul the compressor up into the corner to use up less desirable space.

I would say to do it again, would try to get all 30 or 36" shelves, but the price was right, and I have the space, so I'm happy with what I have.

I have 4' deep pallet racking, the way I use it, I use 2' for storage, and 2' as a walkway to access the items, I have two ladders to make my way to the top.
