14 inch bandsaw choice

I have a choice between two 14-in band saws. The first is the harbor freight 14-in bandsaw, brand new about $400. The second choice is a 4 year old but hardly used Ridgid 14-in bandsaw at 300 to 350 dollars. I can't afford a $1,000 grizzly, there are no jets for sale here, there are no deltas for sale here, pretty much nothing else is available. Given the choice between those two, which should I go for?

Slow your roll and find a used Delta. They are always out there.
Nope. Had my eyes out for 3+ years while looking for other tools. I just got a jointer the other day that should have been $200 but I had to pay close to $300. Saw one delta bandsaw for 800 or 900 a few months back, but if I was gonna pay that, I would but a grizzly. I live in a smaller town and there's not a lot of selection on these things. There's not always something out there, sadly.

Examples of used listings
Craftsman 12" $300
Rikon 10" $475
Delta 14" 28206 $1050
Ridgid 14" $500 (usual price)

Occasionally, I see stuff pop up on the western slope of CO (Grand Junction, etc). Is that too far away from you? If not, I can let you know if I spot something...

I'd appreciate that. I could possibly meet in the middle somewhere.

This is available in Grand Junction:

I was under the impression that Jet and Ridgid are about the same.

Sorry, I am over by Denver, but occasionally get hits on the western side. If I see something quality, I will let you know. Right now, the best one to come up by me was in CO springs, $450 for a Walker Turner with the cast iron stand. But about 6hrs from Vernal, UT (for reference).

Yeah, that's about 10 hours driving from where I am. The gas there and back would cost me $400. Might as well order a Grizzly.

There are a couple over by Grand Junction. A Shopmaster for $75 (12") Shopmaster, and a grizzly for 600 (with some extras) Grizzly. Of course, as soon as you buy one, a great deal on a delta will show up...

Western Slope Craigslist. Searched bandsaw, looks like it was posted towards the end of July. Fruita, so west of Grand Junction. The second name in red is a link for each.

Craigslist in Utah is terrible. I installed the CL app to see if anything else pops up.

I'm sorry that your market for used machines is terrible. Guess you'll just have to buy new...
Not sure my wife will take that excuse. LoL

I swear there people here are terrible for used things... They post ads with things priced as if they were new and they're not gently used, but they low-ball everything they make offers on.

If you have to have it now, there is a Ridgid 14" on KSL for $400 that looks decent. Something like that would work well, but in full candor I would (and did) drive for a Delta.

I have a Jet very much like that one, except mine has a spacer for more height, Carter guides, and a Kreg fence. I would be thrilled if I someone offered me $500 for mine, so feel free to make a lower offer to that seller if you can go that far. FWIW, I've owned at least 5 Delta saws and they are not much better than the Jet saws. Jet has just as much aftermarket support as Delta.

I live in GJ and just bought the Shopmaster 12" last night. It needs tires, new blades, and a rebuilt stand but runs now as is. We'll see if I use it much or if it just takes up space in a corner.

I have more questions than answers.
I'm surprised you aren't finding anything in the Ogden or north davis county area.

I thought everyone in Utah used KSL, when I travel through there I generally don't even look at cl.

I have a older Delta Rockwell that I really like, oddly enough it came out of SLC. Just picked up a older Duro with a 2 speed gear box and 4 speed pulley. It needs some love. I found it by accident driving past a garage sale. Had to take down to fit in the vehicle vs going back with the truck.

You never know when and where one will show up.

I use KSL and Facebook mostly. Check in on CL every now and then.

I've used this 14" Rigid for the past few years. It's a cheap saw, but provided this is for a hobby/personal shop and you're looking for a reasonably priced general-use saw, it fits the bill. I bought this one in nearly new condition for $200 in 2019.

Definitely hobby/personal use. I've actually got a few motors I could swap to whatever bandsaw I get and the upgrades/fixes for the Ridgid are pretty straightforward.

Surprisingly, a Delta (15 years old) just showed up a few hours away. I'm looking into it.

If you have been looking for multiple years, and there is one that meets your criteria then get your @ss in the truck. Waiting and seeing is how the other guy gets your bandsaw.

Seller already has a few people that they said are going to look at it. I'm on "the list".
