I've been at odds trying to find a suitable place to work for years. I restore antique John Deere tractors and do a little woodworking. I turned the first floor of my converted barn house into a workshop but it's hard to work in. I only have about 9ft in any direction because of steel support beams and it's cluttered with lumber and tractors. impossible to work in. I'd love to build a 24x30 pole barn but don't have the means to right now, trying to save for a house.

there was once a corn crib on this slab next to my barn. it's about 14x14, 8 inches thick, and level. 190 square ft might not sound like much but it's an improvement over my current situation. the spirit of the new shop is as nice as possible for as cheap as possible. I have about $300 in it so far. I am never home so finding time to work on it is hard. I did this much framing back in July.

plans:

12/12 shingle roof to match barn
wood siding of some sort, maybe pine
7'6 barn doors, they are wider than half of the wall width on purpose to fit my biggest tractor inside
half loft 8ft deep with 3/4" oak floors to serve as a place for my drumset
stone veneer on the front of the slab where the grade is lower
50A 220V service
LED flood lighting
Grizzly tablesaw, planer, workbench and KRL box

stay tuned :)

I look forward to seeing the updates on this! The small shops are becoming really interesting to me as we have to work harder to make them work... Take lots of pics allong the way!

Are you planning on heating and cooling the space at all? If so now is the time to come up with an insulation plan. For example you could put up a couple of layers of used ridged foam for insulation on the exterior, giving you excellent insulation coverage with very little thermal bridging.

heating yes, cooling no, might spray foam the whole thing inside, can't cost that much. I'll probably hang a 220V forced air heater from the celing.

This smaller projects are more interesting to me since they are realistic and within reach of
Most members here. Someplace to work, hang out and get away ( or as I call it the penalty box). Not too big but easy cleaned up if things start to grow and accumulate.

paid cash for it so far... I figure I'll have $2500 in it when it's done. not my dream shop but not in debt for it either.

slow progress, managed to get 2 days off in the same week and got the ridge beam set and rafters hung. first time notching rafters, came out better than I thought. I could have gone 16" OC with 2x4s but I had a bunch of leftover 2x6s so I think 24" OC will be ok, not much snow load on a 12/12 roof.

Are you sure this size shop is large enough to work on tractors? I would think you need more space than 14X14 in order to be able to get around the tractor to work on it.

antique tricycle John Deeres. my biggest is a 1957 model 620 which is about 7ft wide x 11ft long, thus the 7'6 double door opening.

If you get much snow I doubt you will be able to do a lot to the building until Spring. Once it gets cold and there is snow all over the place it is hard to work on the outside.

:+1: For the money that is going to be one heck of a nice place.

X2... I mean. it's great someone can afford to build the "garage-mahal" and get 4,000 posts but on the other end there's those of us who do a lot with small space and it's fun to read about that too....

not quite as excessive as the "big party garage" but it's designed to fit a woodworking bench, 15" planer, KRL722, 60 gallon air compressor and a table saw as the focal point.

From your pictures it looks like you have a major design flaw. The plates supporting your entire roof load look to be only supported by the shear strength of the nails holding them to the 4x4's.

Did you ever figure out how to secure your entry doors? Can you throw a link here referring to the other one?

Just a thought and interested to see your final outcome. As if we are ever done with a workshop.

I like the use of the old foundation . I have two buried on the property that I have considered using. I would then be adding two more building to the 5 I already have so I am thinking of just adding onto one to make it bigger. Less buildings will look better I think.

2x8s are held to the 4x4s with 4" Timberlok screws. only nails are holding the fascia boards to the ends of the rafters. I'm not an engineer but it said they have a shear strength of 260lbs each and I've been through about 6 boxes of them.

one coat of Behr weatherproofing, 50 degrees. everything I've read about this product says it's one coat only.
