Thanks! Epifanes clear varnish. Did the first couple coats on the door panels and I love how it goes on. Kinda pricey, but supposed to be really good stuff.

No kidding! I try to do glue ups with minimal clamps, but with the way I made the lattice there's not really any other option than lots and lots of small clamps.

I know I read an article someplace about someone using clamps and he went up and down the street to borrow enough clamps to get the project done.

How much of the door is protected by the roof overhang? I know that will prolong the life of the door and finish too.

Both door frames pinned and glued. One door lattice glued. Glass insert will be sandwiched by glued lattice and removable lattice. Probably didn’t have enough clamps!0E285B17-9670-4658-BB1C-E5AE36E669E0.jpeg

I use every project as an excuse to buy more clamps. I made a bed for my son that had some large glue ups. That resulted in buying around 40-6" f clamps from HF. Very handy to have a bucketful on hand

The eaves aren't very large and I will need to add a small gutter at least to keep splashback from hitting the bottom of the door since it's not on the gable end. It's also on the north side of the building, so that'll help mitigate sun-damage.

Mortised the first hinge with a trim router and chisels. It went pretty well, though I think I’ll route the next ones a little differently so the router base has more support throughout the majority of the cut.

Beautiful doors! What are you plans for protecting them from the weather?

Did you keep track of the hours involved?
Thanks! The finish is a high quality marine grade spar, so it should withstand the weather well. I’ll also install a gutter so that will reduce splashing.

I haven’t tracked my time - but I’d estimate at least 60 hours.

I have a list...
  • Poplar and cherry bed for oldest son. Have had the wood for about a year now... and he's been without a bed frame for about 4 years now 😳
  • Black walnut dining table. Again, have had the wood for about a year now. This will be a fun and challenging project - 8/4 wood and I'm planning on doing mitered folded edges to make it look even thicker and build a heavy steel base/legs
  • Lazy susan for the kitchen cupboard
  • Rack for the kitchen to hold jars my wife uses to grow sprouts for the chickens
  • 4 Barstools hardwood top and metal base/legs
  • Cabinet for basement bathroom to hold cleaning supplies
  • Belt grinder
  • Vise - ala Fireball Tool design
  • Various dust collector hoods/connectors

That's quite the list !! I'll have a 14x24 space to build out as a wood shop soon so I'll be watching how you set it all up and what you change.

Mama Bear has a black walnut dining room table on my build list as well. Post pics when you get to it !!

Great update. The brick paving will look great when it’s all complete. How many bricks do you have to cut up for the “edge triangles”?

What’s going on with the gable end of the shop in Post #65?

Thanks! I haven't counted how many I'm going to need to cut... It's going to be a lot!

On the gable end I still need to build a pair of 4x8' doors. I wanted to have the flexibility of opening up that side when doing larger projects or ventilation or just open when the weather is nice in the spring and fall. I just haven't gotten to it yet and it's all weatherproofed right now so I haven't worried about it yet.

Great work, killed it on the doors! Pavers look outstanding as well. I got a sister in Providence possibly in your neck of the woods.

Finally working on the gable end doors. Trying to make them as cheap as possible while being stable and durable. Mortise and tenons on all the joints (very far from perfect - plenty of gaps here and there) and going with a gel stain and spar urethane for UV protection. I’ll add a 2” layer of R-10 insulation foam on the back and another 1/4” sheet of plywood so I can still mount some lighter weight things to the inside of the door and also have some insulation.

Doors look good.

What are you doing for overhangs outside the doors? I’m sure it won’t take long for the weather to mark them somehow.

Any projects completed from last March’s wish list?

very nice work, I would've went with a metal roof if it was allowable...just a thot.
Thanks! Metal for the shop roof? Yeah, there were compromises made - I needed it to match the house as closely as possible so loml was happy.

My amazing wife saw a Costco deal on MrCool mini splits and was like, “hey let’s get one for the shop.” 12K system - still need to run it a little longer to ensure no leaks then button up all the insulation and figure out a better way to store the extra line set loops under the wall mount (rather than cloth belts 😂)
