Going through some misplaced/mismatched stuff I found this no name 1/4" drive 15/32 socket.
Now besides someone giving me a smart *** anser of "a 15/32 bolt".......what is this for. The socket has no brand stamped on it. Only a size.

Are you looking for specific applications? Like gm bla bla bla interior hex cap screws? It's a normal socket that would come in a set.

Since sometime in the early 1900s, the standard US sizes for hexagonal bolt heads and nuts have come in two flavors, SAE and Heavy. The SAE heads are 1 1/2 times the bolt shank diameter, the Heavy heads 1/8 inch larger.

A common example, for a bolt with a 3/8 inch diameter shank: An SAE standard head would be 1 1/2 x 3/8 inch = 9/16 inch. A Heavy standard head would be 9/16 inch + 1/8 inch.

Under both of these formulae, a bolt with a "odd sixteenths" shank diameter would have a "odd thirty-seconds" head.
For a bolt with a 5/16 inch shank, an SAE head would be 1 1/2 x 5/16 inch = 15/32 inch, and a Heavy head would be 15/32 + 1/8 inch = 19/32 inch.
For a bolt with a 7/16 inch shank, an SAE head would be 1 1/2 x 7/16 inch = 21/32 inch, and a Heavy head would be 21/32 inch + 1/8 inch = 25/32 inch.

It's a "normal socket", just not particularly common. I've never had to use an 8-point socket yet I have 3 of them.

I have a couple that came in sets, but I think they're all cheapish imports. 15/32 is very nearly the same as 12mm, most likely the factory that made these stamped the same sockets with 12mm for metric sets and 15/32 for standard sets. It wouldn't cost much extra to do and they can sell a set as a 13 piece instead of a 12 piece or something.

I have an old Craftsman 19/32 socket, in 12 point. Is your socket old? I think many years ago fasteners came in these sizes before industry "standardized" on the conventional sizes we know today.

15/32 is a weird size, even for 32th sizes! - 17/32 and 25/32 are much more common for example

1/2" is a pretty poor fitting substitute for 15/32, but 12mm is a very good sub!

I think i have a 15/32 box end indestro wrench along with a decent amount of other x/32 wrenches and sockets. I think the only time ive used it was on a 38'ish dodge brothers panel truck i was helping disassemble...i was pretty excited to be able to use it for something!

I used that size as a kid on my dirt bikes before I owned a real 12mm socket. Came from a very cheap imported set I got for Christmas when I was about 10

31/32 is one I can't say I've encountered. I have a 1/2 drive SK in this size.

It must be a pretty new socket to have off-corner engagement. If it were me I would keep it, because I occasionally run across 12mm bolt heads that are actually a little smaller than 12mm and the 15/32" might fit perfectly in those situations.
