Nice start there, Indy. You'll be able to do away with the masking tape telling you what's in the drawers once you start using them regularly. You'll just know.

I had to wait until I was 18 to have any tools that were worth anything. Dad gave them to me for High School graduation. A set of SAE wrenches (S&K), a set of deep/shallow 3/8 drive sockets (S&K), and a set of shallow 1/4 drive sockets (Blackhawk). I've still got them and still use them. That was 30 years ago.
I made a deal with Dad for an old portable box (small). I used that box for probably 10 years. I've still got it too.

Nice start. I'm putting a set together for my 12 year old son. He's not much into wrenching yet, but at some point he'll be out on his own and will need a decent set of tools. My parents started me out with my first set of Craftsman at 17 (I still have them 30 years later).

Yup. I have no labels & when someone else is working over there & needs something I can just say "large toolbox, left side, bottom cabinet, 4th draw down" when they ask for a hammer etc

Very nice Start! I started with a Metal 3 Drawer Craftsman with a flip top. It went with me everywhere I drove. It got stolen when I was about 22 though. Along with all of my tools I had collected over the years.

My dad bought me a 300pc. Proto-Challenger Master Set when I was 12.
However, I was not allowed to open it until I was about 14ish....guess he knew I'd start disassembling everything I got my hands on.
Still have them today, but I'm still only 24, and use them daily at work.
And now that I think about it, the sets nowadays ****. mine came with the same sizes in deep, shallow, 6 pt, & 12 pt sockets. If you buy a set from sears, you don't get all the deep sockets to go with the shallows...What is up with that?

That is a great start, I wish I had that when I was 15. I am trying to build a set for both my boys but they could care less....It breaks my heart I have tried everything oh well maybe one day!

Indy, You're doing great. Wise of you to start building your own set of tools at a young age. Advice - DON'T loan them to your friends. LEt them work on their stuff at YOUR HOUSE, but don't let them take stuff with them.
I'd suggest keeping you eye out for tools at garage sales. Get up early on Saturday mornings - sometimes you can pick up real bargains. Even if your Dad has stuff you can use, start looking for your own. Look for a bench grinder at those garage sales, or buy one at Harbor Freight (or a birthday/Christmas request?). If you put a wire wheel on it, they're invaluable for cleaning up neglected tools you'll find at those sales. I'm 55 and STILL have a cheapie HF type Chinese bench grinder I bought 30 years ago. I thought I'd replace it in a couple years but it just keep gong and going!
P.S. If you're handy (you are or you wouldn't be here) search the internet for how to convert a washing machine motor into a bench grinder! THere is ALWAYS a cheaper way to do things if you're creative.

Oh well, it probably won't be that hard to find another...someplace! If you make your own bench grinder (especially out of a good brand of washing machine) it will basically last forever. Good luck and post pictures if you ever take on the project. BTW, Happy Easter to everyone, Dan

My dad gave me a set about 13 ....he gad an agenda in mind....that's when I stopped leaving them everywhere. Did the same with my kid...now he is on his own and has a good collection.....Now I wish my wife would quit taking stuff out.....found my bolt cutter rusty in the back yard...she was using it to trim branches

Good start!! Wish I had a box like that when I was your age. It was never a problem for me using my dad's tools but at 15 or 16 he gave me a bench top Par-X box full of the basics from Snap On, Mac, Par-X and Blue Point. I still have all but a couple of pieces today and expanded the collection quite a bit.

My wife ruined a brand new pair of tin snips cutting coat hangers for a craft project I keep them around to remind me how lucky I was in the end that she didn't use the pair my grandpa gave me. She doesn't mess with my tools anymore without asking first.crewchief888
