My house is for sale and I am out of town. My dad calls and said the a/c is not working. He called a company and the tech quoted that price for a multi speed replacement. The unit is a TRANE and is 8 years old. He says he can put a single speed motor in for $800. I need opinions. Sounds to expensive. Air handler is in the attic with access stairs.

Blower motors can run ~300+ if you buy them yourself. I'd charge $800 to change one is this heat! in an attic :)

Are you good with a wrench and screwdriver? Do it yourself:

or check ebay. I got my forced air exhaust blower there (it wasn't cheap either)

Sometimes you just pay for the convenience (& Warranty) of having someone else do it.

Is the high price for a variable speed motor? If so I would bite the bullet and replace it, if you retrofit it to a non-variable it may come up as a problem during a home inspection and screw up a sale.

I would explain to the service company that the home is for sale and you would like any warranty on the new parts to transfer to the new owners, this should not be a problem.

Seems awfully high, unless he is replacing a variable speed ECM motor or something. Most blowers are multi speed today. Typically you have one speed for heating and one for cooling. Back when I had a service van 8 years or so ago, I believe we charged like 500-600 for a standard blower motor replacement.

$1500 is the going rate (installed) where I live for a variable speed fan in a quality AH from a reputable installer. Neighbor got one not too long ago.

I feel your pain. I too sold a home from 1500 miles away, and had to pay dearly to get even the most simple things fixed!

If this is an honest variable speed as opposed to multispeed, and the fact that it is Trane, which often means there is no "universal" replacement, than the quote may not be too far off.

I do not know how difficult it is to replace but if ducting needs to be removed and replaced it could take some time. Also I suspect you do not want additional calls on the issue. If you replace it on the "cheap" and observed by the potential buyer, it could send a wrong signal and it may be better to just step up and pay, and be done with it.
