A bit over 15' x 26'would be the outside dimensions of a detached single car garage we would be putting up this year. Size is limited by our lot and setback. About 400 ft.²
Reading some of the post titles from you guys it makes me laugh 30 x 40 or 40 x 50 or 50 x 60- that would be nice
It's deep enough that having scissor trusses in the back 2/3rds for a lift and some type of storage attic in the front third- A flat deck above where the garage door would roll up maybe how we maximize our space.
Based on the location we would need a human door on the same gable-end (short) wall as the garage door (facing the street) and another human door immediately next to it on the long wall - this is to allow him in traffic into the backyard on that side of the house as the SW corner of the garage would just touch the NE corner of our house.
Not overlapping makes the roof simpler to figure overlapping some may be easier to tie electrical into the main house and maximize the size of it, if even just a foot.
Using 16 foot span would be one reason to go 16 feet wide instead of 15 three.
Are there other general sweet spots when it comes to working with the cars of wishing you had 17' wide instead of 16' or some magical number - or is it purely to get as much space as you can since you're spending the money- The incremental cost of going a bit wider is better (if it would fit)?
Electrical is on the program but not sure plumbing is in the plans it's so close to our main house not sure it's worth the trouble and expense to have a utility sink in there and again I don't have much space
Thinking about doing radiant heat with passive solar cells (The black kind with tubing) since the ridge line is perpendicular to north south, so the whole southern side of the pitched roof would be ideal to receive sun and heat.
This will be our first garage ever as a household - space is at a premium in Northern Virginia and property is expensive so we bought a smaller house without a garage a few years back.
