having a 16mm but no 15mm while having a 5/8 in the same set is the highest level of trolling possible

I've never understood the appeal of the black finish on wrenches. I have a hard enough time in keeping up with the chrome wrenches. At least they are somewhat noticeable looking over an engine compartment when I'm finished with a job.

There is a few industries like Aviation that chrome chipping can be considered a FOD hazard and industrial finish tools are required. It is a very narrow field that actually needs these types of wrenches.

Have read that in an industrial or assembly line environment the oxide finish was less prone to theft by employees. Less shiny, less likely to end up in someone's lunchbox.

They're awesome wrenches man.

Uh try a cart or tray so you don't have to worry about losing stuff. Actually I use an upside down frisbee for tools sometimes, don't tell anyone it's a secret. Carts would be good for more complicated jobs though and pretty cheap if you accept chinese stuff.

Agree. What is the point of buying a set that skips common sizes. Stop at 15mm or add one if you must get rid of 16mm, but don't skip a size. It's why I stopped buying sets. If I need a wrench I buy one, because it's damn sure I'll be going to the store anyway because the tool I need is always the one that is missing from the set. :lol_hitti

These "Craftsman Professional Use" (they're actually "Industrial" stamped) sets skip sizes because they are a hodge podge of the very last of the leftover Made in USA Craftsman tools. The only difference between the "Industrial" and the "Made in USA" Craftsman tools is the stamp, although I don't believe the black-oxide finish was ever offered outside of the industrial line.

Virtually all of the regular "Craftsman" stamped wrenches, sockets etc. including even a lot of open-stock are now shipping from the new china stock.

Ordering the "Professional Use" open stock tools or sets is the only way to guarantee buying USA-made Craftsman tools. Once they're gone, they'll likely never be offered through Sears again.

I've loaded up on the "Professional Use" sets, mainly because I'm an OCD tool collector. These black oxide wrenches are priced quite a bit higher than the regular nickel-chrome raised panel wrenches, but they're also pretty rare, so I bought some because I think they're cool. If you need wrenches, they're still priced lower than other USA-made tools and in that regard are a great deal.

Is Sears still denying they are discontinuing the industrial & professional use lines?

I just got the 16pc and 22pc black oxide set, both are also on sale. Ordered the five missing wrenches (15/16, 1-1/4, 24mm, 26mm, 28mm) to compete the set too. Will be interested if they can compete the order, third party partners seem to be able to order things that Sears.com/Craftsman.com reports out of stock.

I will probably use this set for finish work, the chrome RP wrenches seem to have burrs and extra chrome around the edge of the open end.

Zx2slow. I too just order a set. I also was able to pick up a couple missing pieces from Grainger. If you don't mind me asking where did you pick up your missing items from.

Got one from Sears and the rest from Summit this time around, normally Grainger is my go to source.

Got the 16pc & 22pc sets in today. All USA and all the stamping/roll marks look deep and crisp. All -VΛ- Danaher/Armstrong -2010. Wiped them down good because they were packed in with a lot of oil.

The Armstrong equivalent Craftsmen Professional or Industrial are great US made wrenches. If you don't mind the oxide finish, these are a real good deal. I have some chrome Craftsmen Pros and they are nice wrenches. No, not Wrightgrip, but very good. I also have some proper Armstrong chrome and some SK chrome and Proto chrome now. These are all about the same as the Craftsman Pro Chrome, all pro quality US made wrenches. - Paul

Great looking wrenches. Does the black finish rub off easy?

You can click for zoomed in picture and have the answer to the question.
It is more like matte black which is fine but has very poor finish.
You can see thru multiple shiny metal spot due to thin coating and multiple scratch marks all over the place.
It looks almost like somebody painted with a spray can but felt lazy so he is done with one coat.

It is possible also to do your own black oxide with a kit if they ever got scratched up. I'm pondering getting one of these kits for various black oxide old tools I have. It is easily replenishable, unlike chrome if it gets scraped up. Full polish chrome is great for best rust protection, but some like the rougher or more pebble like surface to grip better so they won't slip. Different preferences for different people.... - Paul

Do not get these if finish is your primary concern. The black oxide is more a rudimentary finish for initial shipping and storage before sale than to be a long term protective finish.

If they are used as daily tools, they will wear to bare steel quite quickly. I would not recommend these for the occasional weekend wrencher unless you wipe down the wrenches from time to time with a good preservative gun type oil or you will have rusty wrenches in no time.

Like I mentioned before, Industrial finish tools are geared to unique tool market users that require them for the lack of chrome chipping potential and creating a FOD hazard.

Thanks for posting op. Added filler & ordered with the $15 in surprise points for $30 spent in tools email received last week. Used up last of my rewards points & have the free ship trial as well. Don't think it'll get much cheaper online. Fills out my car tool bag. Only a matter of time before these deals on USA professional use tools disappear.

I ordered the 16 pc. set as well as most of the loose stock oxide wrenches on the website. It's true, the finish is not "pretty" but in my line of work, I've long since gave up on buying full polish wrenches. The chemicals I work around degrade the finish and what's not corroded begins to flake off in razor sharp shards. I almost exclusively use satin finish Armstrong wrenches but the satin ends up looking like the oxide finish after a year or so anyway. I figure that these wrenches, for their price and fairly good quality are a good buy. Does anyone know if Armstrong and Craftsman loose stock are made in the same facility or does WF make those for CM. The RP and Armstrongs look nothing alike.

I was able to get an entire Inch set in the CM black oxide from 1/4 to 1 with only skipping the 7/8 wrench. In metric, I was able to get 1-14 and then a 16mm. The 7/8, 15, 17, 18 etc. can all be bought through Harry Epstein in the SK Black Oxide finish at the $7- $8 range each. If you want a full set of BO's and don't mind mixing the Cmans and SKs, a full set of inch and metric can be had for about $100.

All except one of them were stamped "Craftsman Industrial" on one side and just "USA" on the other along with a model number. The one exception, it may have been the 10 mm, was simply stamped "Craftsman" on one side and "Forged in USA" along with the model number on the other. The model number on this one begins with a 4 like a regular RP while all the others begin with a 2.

I try to grab an extra 10mm for all my sets as I use them and lose them a lot. I have two 10mm BO wrenches, both stamped Craftsman Industrial on one side and 10mm USA on the other. I see no difference in the stamp on the RP of any wrench in the set.
