16' x 7' Insulated Garage Door Recommendation

Can anybody recommend a good quality insulated garage door that will work with the Liftmaster 8500 opener? Did you go through Home Depot / Lowes? Elsewhere?

Did you self install or hire someone to install it?

I have 3 Clopay doors all insulated 9 x 7. I installed them with the help of my brother.

Not as big as what you will be doing, but 2 people doing it can't hurt. You can get them with torsion springs so you could use that liftmaster. I believe the new torsion springs can be adjusted using a socket wrench or driver drill so a little less dangerous tightening them up. Good luck.

I have a 16'x9' insulated Haas door. The quality is insane. Has a beefy strut on each panel as well.

Just ordered two 12'x12' Wayne Dalton 8300's. R12 with a window row. Amarr was also in the running but the WD were lower priced. Going with the LM8500s

I like the idea of adding windows to the garage door as I have no source of natural light otherwise. Did you go frosted or tinted to prevent anyone from being able to see inside your garage?

I have a 16x8' Wayne Dalton 8300 with one row of windows...the windows are high enough up on the door that unless you were 7' tall you wouldn't be able to look in them anyway.

I'm not familiar with the Liftmaster 8500 but I recently obtained pricing on some 18x7 insulated doors from a local garage door company. I know it's bigger than what you want/need but I just thought that I would share for comparative purposes. A garage door is not something I want to mess with installing, adjusting, etc so the prices below are all installed, using my existing opener.

I'm also hoping for door + install and those prices seem pretty good! I'm seeing approx $1,700 for 2" thick with polyurethane insulation. Add windows and it becomes $2,100. Going to meet someone at the house this afternoon and get another quote.

As some very good door manufacturers are regional I would need to know where you live before making a recommendation.

While some are happy with the doors they have. I've done enough service calls on some mentioned that I would never have them on my house.

That should work. Make sure you get struts and opener prep in case down the road you change opener.

Window sections should have struts frosted windows will let light in but you can't see in or out. Except at night you can see shadows inside if the lights are on.

For the 8500 you should have a high lift track. If that isn't possible use pusher springs.

It crossed my mind but the light outweighs the risk , IMO. Plus it’s close to 6ft tall so you really can’t see too much unless you are pretty tall or have a ladder.

What do you mean window sections should have struts? And what are pusher strings. I only have 8' ceilings, so no high lift track. The purpose of the 8500 was mainly to replace an ancient opener with a smart one and to de-clutter an already low ceiling.

Thank you Todd! You just gave me an idea to try to get the price down by negotiating the vinyl liners. They're trying to charge $180 for those... granted I could easily do them myself. I was going back and forth on the windows due to security concerns, but my driveway is basically a tunnel with a security camera at the end of it and I think some natural light might really be nice. Would be hard to get in the garage even if you broke one of the windows, no?

When you cut windows in a door you weaken the structure while adding weight. When the door is open all the weight is spread across your 16' door and only the rollers supporting the weight of the door. The struts help keep the door from sagging and gives some wind load support when closed.

Pusher springs help keep tension on the cables when the door is closing. Jackshaft openers turn the spring shaft at start up, the opener will move faster than the door creating slack in the cables. pusher springs push onthe door keeping tension on the cables at start up. OtherwiseThe cables can birdsnest and bind up. You won't be able to open or close the door until they are fixed. It will happen on the coldest day of the year when you're dressed up and in a hurry. Some will say you don't need pusher springs. Get thier number so they can come fix it when it birdsnest.

It’s possible , anything would be possible. But it would not be easy or a super stealth way to get in. Below is a pic of my door. I didn’t put on the little brackets. Any concerns I might have is the big snap on logo on my box top would be visible. I wasn’t worried about once I saw the light coming in the garage.

They threw in the vinyl B.B. rollers for free. It s a super quiet door. Slow, but quiet

Crazy issues with them opening on their own after 3 years. Supposedly corrected since may-june 17 production.
