I have a combination wrench set that's missing the 16mm wrench, and finding a replacement hasn't been easy. I have found several of the particular wrench style in 5/8", just none in 16mm. Any reason I simply couldn't use the 5/8" wrench? Aren't they close enough to be considered virtually the same?

16mm= 0.63" 5/8"= 0.625" You be the judge. Depends alot on the tolerance of the wrenches, as well as of the fasteners. Better to have a quality wrench set with no gaps.

I interchange sockets all the time, sometimes I need a wobble socket working on the classic stuff, but not often enough to drop 300-400 bucks on another set.

11mm - 7/16
14mm - 9/16 but is very dependent on the quality of sockets and fasteners
16mm - 5/8
19mm - 3/4
21mm - 13/16
22mm - 7/8

and more:

15mm - 19/32" (not common size anymore but I've done it)
27mm - 1 1/16"

Back to the original question, go ahead and use the 5/8".
