Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a 16x24 wood shed and I was wanting to know how many post I need for the foundation? I am new here and I am looking for help.

Thank you,

Kevin

I would put the post no further than 8' apart in both directions.

Are you setting post to use as part of the wall structure, or are you using them just tall enough out of the ground to build a floor structure, then build your walls on top of a floor? If that is the case, and it were my shed, I would build it with the post at 6' intervals on your 24' length. It's a few more post, but a little overkill can be a good thing.

It really depends on a couple of things

  • How much weight are you planning on putting on the floor ? Are we talking bicycles and lawnmowers or a full sized Bridgeport and a couple of SBC engines ?
  • What kind of flooring are you using (3/4" tongue-and-groove is typical) ?
  • What are you using for beams and joists ? 2x8, 2x10, 2x12 ?

8' spacing would be good adequate for pretty heavy loads, if you are using PT 2x10 for the rim joist and placing the cross beams at 8' with 2x6 joist (attached with joist hangers) every 4'. Make sure to space everything so that the plywood flooring edges will land on top of a beam/joist.

Lighter duty, drop down to 2x8 rim joists and cross beams and 2x4 joists.

I am using them just tall enough out of the ground to build a floor structure, then build your walls on top of a floor. I am also going to using most of the space for fire wood, also putting a 60" zero turn lawn mower an log splitter in there.

I used 4"x6" on a 32 x56 and I put posts every 4'. I bought 10' posts, cut in half with 4' in the ground and 1' out. Didn't cost that much more in the big scheme of things.

ok I did some figuring, if I use 21 posts in the ground, they would be spaced 4' apart on the 24' length,(just wondering if that would be over kill).
If i use 15 posts they would be spaced 6' apart on the 24' length.
Right now at the present time I have qty=10, 4x6's by 5ft long that would give me 4' in the ground and 1' above
