18” Storage cabinet options

Hi, all. New joiner and first time post. I’ve read several threads on storage cabinets but none I found addressed my particular need.

Looking for 18” deep medium-duty cabinets for hobby and car maintenance, that I can set on a ledger board and wall mount. Craftsman and Husky aren’t rated for mounting (supposedly) so NewAge Bold was my first choice but after reviews they seem flimsy. I’m wondering if there is something in the 18-20 gauge range that won’t bend and dent when you look at it.

I only need 3 closets and about 5 upper cabinets as I’ll be searching for higher end, second hand tool cabinets and building my own workbench down the road so I can spend a little more on these now.

Any options a little more robust than NewAge Bold?

Is there any reason you can’t build out a small platform so your closet cabinets don’t need to be hung? I’ve found most tall sheet metal cabinets really like to be supported at the base to keep the strength of the cabinet. Maybe look at adjustable legs for kitchen cabinets if a platform won’t work.

As for brands, there are many threads on new garage cabinets here, unfortunately I typically buy used and repurpose, so I can’t help there.

They don’t have to be hung. It’s just a preference for cleaning, not worrying about losing nuts and bolts etc.

My main qualm is the quality. Everything is either thin 24 gauge, or if it’s 18 gauge and heavier duty it’s 24” deep. My garage space is tight so 6” while doesn’t seem much is a big difference

I have the New Age bold series and they work just fine for my shop. Of course, I don't "abuse" them, but use them for lots of storage.
I have mine mounted to the studs (and all bolted together on the sides) and they are pretty sturdy.

Thanks, all. I checked out metal cabinet store. $750 for a 16 gauge welded unit and piano hinges is pretty good for the money imo.

I just stopped by lowes and took time checking out the craftsman and kobalts again, the 24 gauge doesn’t seem so bad as long as your treat them well. So maybe the Bold series will work.

Only thing is I need 3 cabinets and 5+ top boxes. NewAge wants you to buy by the set, which any option that includes the 3 and 5 I want has a bunch of bottom chests and tables etc for $2000 that I don’t want. Buying a NewAge Bold closet individually comes at $550+ where Im probably better off buying the Durham from MCS and just keeping it on the floor (albeit, not as attractive)

Pucel definitely meets the requirements and fairly local to me. Only thing is they don’t have pricing available that I could see, but I’ll check them out.

Where are you located ???? You need to look out for old 50's kitchen cabinets. Big brands were Geneva, St. Charles and Kitchen Cabinet. Look at Craigs List, Habitat Re Use It store, Antique Stores (if you can believe that!!) Face Book Misc, etc. As they are indestructible!
I purchase cabinets from two kitchens and was able to work them into my garage layout. When everything was said and done, the cost was around $40 per cabinet.
This will take you a couple of yrs to locate, but you can always change your layout based upon what you have. Don't give up !! Just keep looking !!!

What ever you choose you can set the cabinets as high as the adjustable legs go. This should give you a good 4+ inches underneath and allows plenty of space to get a shop vac into for cleaning. I had Bold cabinets and they were fine once the are wall mounted and floor supported. My new house I installed the Pro series and they are much better and a 24” deep hold a ton more.

Thanks. Part of why I’m going prefabricated route is because of impatience. I’d love to find second/third hand Stronghold or other shop cabinets or decent sized metal kitchen cabinets. After a month of looking, I just don’t have the patience to wait a long time to find the pieces.

I might revisit NewAge. My issue is only needing 3 lockers and 5 of their wall mounts. The cost for these would be more than a higher end set like Saber or a Pucel locker. If they had these in a set, Id probably buy it today.

In my shop everything is off the floor, or on casters. I have a 18x36x72 tall cabinet I took angle iron and built a frame and mounted castors. I don't move it often, but I have moved it loaded. I put all the heavy stuff at the bottom. I have a portable DeWalt plane on the bottom shelf with a Ported Cable Router, and a plate joiner, and the next shelf up is another bunch of power tools, the next two sheves are small items that don't weigh much.
