I am trying to fill a space above my work bench but only have about 20" to use vertically. I see a 30" wide x 18" tall cabinet on home depot's website but I am not sure how durable it is. The constructions says plywood with hardwood face frame and doors. It will not be used to store anything heavy. I recently sold my table so or I would make something but it wouldn't look all that great. Aside from these linked below does anyone know of anything more appropriate around $50 each?

I keep forgetting to check there but was also wondering if someone knew of a more robust version. Probably wouldn't be $50 though.

If you won't be loading it up too much, should be durable enough.

I like Ikea for cheap kitchen cabinets, might be another option to consider.

I think you'll have a hard time finding 18" tall steel cabinets from garage/workshop cabinet brands.

Have you actually gone and looked at what they have?

Some are cheap, some are quite robust. Sometimes they have vintage metal ones from the 1950's.

I have bought 2 wooden and one steel cabinet from out local reclaimed building material store. All the cabinets are about 3' x 3' x 18" deep. And all three were 50 bucks or less

It would be hard to overload such a small cabinet unless you just tried to. Mine are home depot but they are not plywood they are particle boxes with wood fronts. I dont remember seeing any plywood boxes in any of the unfinished units. e6bb6cc01e48ca43327c08b04410ff4f.jpg

No matter what they are made like you can do things to improve them. For example I’m guessing the back plywood is ****. You can use it as a template and cut half inch ply and glue it in well. So gives you better screw in hold. If there is a space back there using a French cleat helps. Otherwise attach a ledger under them. So they all sit in it and the backs are just holding them up. Much stronger then just screwing to wall.

I used 10 of the 30 inch HD unfinished cabinets in our previous garage. Painted w/ solid color stain. They were great for the 15 yrs we used them. I agree w/ Kaisen on the ledger board. I used a 1x2 mainly because I was installing them myself and I could hold them in place w/ one hand and run a screw in w/ the other. Once they were up I saw no need to remove the 1x2.

I don't think the cabinet I linked is available in store to look at. Will check Habitat Resale shop for sure. I will have some metal pegboard below the cabinet on a 1x4 to support the cabinets.

Be careful of the cheaper particle board cabinets. Most of them are put together with air staplers and half the time the factory worker shoots them on the edge, or half in and half out deal or the staple misses completely.
Reinforcing the backing with ply as one mentioned, is a good idea.

Good luck

I took some old kitchen cabinets that were trashed particle board boxes with good face frames, made new boxes from plywood to the size I wanted, then recycled the face frames
A quick coat of paint and I had cabinets for the garage the size and depth I wanted. I find
2 foot deep cabinets too deep and 1 foot too shallow so I made 18 inch deep.
