I run a small powder coating shop we just upgraded to a 185 cfm compressor from my 5 hp eaton That I have been using doing it on the side for me and friends. Huge step foward for the biz but Have a few questions. Some blasting will be done outside but most parts will be able to fit in the blast cabinet we have constructed it is almost the same size of the oven (4x4x6). I know what tip and air jet I can run but worry about trying to use 185 cfm in a blast cabinet and not being able to control the gun. Any suggestions on gun choice and jet and tip sizing would be great and also possibly the pickup tube choice I am also going to call tp tools and see what they suggest and pick up a few things for my home blast cabinet (4x4x4).
You guys always seem to know whats up.

What the compressor can deliver and what the gun can pass are two different things. If you use the same gun you have been using then the action will be the same if the pressure is the same. What pressure is your 185 CFM compressor rated at?

it puts out 90 psi. most stuff I blast gets donw at 60 psi even with my current setup unless its heavy rust or im dealing with pitted chrome. currently we use black dimond media. The main reason for the compressor setup is to get away from having to use stripper. I have some stuff that eats powder off wheels in 10 min and leaves them clean but its BAD to be around and the part still needs a light blasting after anyways.
i think trying to ue all 185 cfm in the cabinet is way to much to be able to hold on to the gun. As I have ran it out of the pressure put and it takes two hands to keep it under control.

With that much air setup 6 guns inside the cabinet that rotate around the part and blast it automatically :D

in all seriousness, the gun will only pass X cfm @ Y psi... so if it's regulated to 60psi you shouldn't have any change in the guns behaviour (unless it was air starved before). If you upgrade to a larger orifice, it can pass more air and will have more power... Go by the specs on the blasting gun.

maybe I miss worded my question has anyone used a big gun in a cabinet with real cfm backing it up. Air delivery will not be a problem I just worry about spending the big money on a blast gun that wont work for me and be to tough to control.

i have a commercial soda/media blasting set-up. 250cfm sullair with 1.5" blast hoses backed by 2" supply lines. i run a 5/8" nozzle for soda, it is a handful. the head alone weighs about 8-10 lbs. the pressure and cfm helps to take some weight off the line and gun but it can still be a tiring job. plus i am concerned about the volume of air that would be entering your cabinet. would it be able to vent enough without blowing out a side? here is my rig, i run a 100lb. sodablast pot with a 30 gallon dryer/seperator. i also have a 500lb. schmidt mfg. sand/media pot.

That's awesome..Would be a nice way to make extra money. Drive to peoples places and blast stuff, and rent it out when not in use. I have a 2 stage 4hp 80 gallon, 12.6cfm @90 compressor. Works ok for blasting, but not the most powerful, and can run alot and be annoying.

i used to do "come to" blasting and it is very lucrative and in demand. i did it solid for about 5 years, paid for the rig and now use it in my autobody restoration business. it is the type of "tool" that people flock to and it keeps pretty busy blasting the occasional stock trailer or even an olympic sized swimming pool. (not fun and don't remind the wife about that job) good luck with your new purchase and enjoy the time it frees up. yeah right you'll probably just do more jobs.

more jobs in the same amount of time is the plan with my 20 cfm at 90 eaton it was painful at best knowing 50% of my time was in blasting. I think I will try something like this http://sandblaster-parts.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=37_59&product_id=159 I would like try that be around 50 cfm use at 90 psi and like 40 at 60 where most parts get blasted at. I dont think the cabinet would like much more air then that going into it, but the dust collection setup is I believe 800 cfm and as of right now we have a adjustable air intake so you could possibly adjust it to keep the cabinet clear maybe not.
Thanks for the help all and blt2go super nice and clean setup Ours isnt neerly that nice just a old 200 lb pressure pot and the 185 gardner denver I think it is compressor.

gardner-denvers are great compressors. i believe a 185 g/d with the correct plumbling will flow closer to 200cfm if i remember right. good luck and just pm if you need anything, ah heck just post i'll find it and maybe it'll help someone else. congrats and enjoy. as long as your cabinet will expel/handle the extra cfm i don't see a problem.
