Hello folks, I need a bit of advice on the best place to get replacement 18v batteries for my Dewalt drill.

I have 3 batteries for it, all 2.6 Ah and all of them Nickel Metal Hydride. All of them are getting old and dont hold charge as well as they did so I have decided to buy replacements. I will be in the US later this month and prices seem to be lower over there. Here in the UK the same batteries are between £70 and £100 each which is about $105 to $150 each.

A quick search on the internet shows me a 2 pack of Nickel Cadmium 2.4 Ah batteries for $99 in Home Depot.

I have not tried to revive the old ones, I have heard that you can do that with NiCad but not NiMH.

Can anyone advise me on the best place to get replacements and what sort of price to pay?

Many Thanks.

Make sure to get their "XRP" version. I have the standard 18V NiCad and the XRP too, and the XPR version does last longer.

FWIW, I paid $99 for my new pair at Lowes.

Are you looking to buy them in store or online?

I guess it could be either. I know where I will be staying in the US so I could buy online, say, the day before I fly and have them delivered to my hotel. Alternatively I could buy in store.

If the price is massively different between store and online then that might decide it for me.

I got a pair of 18v lithium batteries, you need a new charger but they are much better then the older battery technologies and work with all of the 18v tools. You might price check them as well.

A couple of things

You can often find better prices on those batteries new on eBay.

What I have done in the past is to buy a set on sale that has 2 batteries, a drill, some other tool and a charger and then sell off what I dont want. Then I have the batteries for less that it would have cost me.

Right now lowes has a deal on a 3 piece set for $199
Keep the batteries and sell the rest

You could also take them to a battery store and have them rebuilt for about half the price of brand new. I had a couple of them rebuilt a few years ago and they held up quite well. I couldn't really tell the difference between the rebuilt and new ones.

Also, I think someone on eBay had the batteries all set up to be dropped into your battery housing. Just unscrew the casing and remove the old batteries and drop in the new

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have looked at rebuilding the ones I have here in the UK but it works out at £50 ($78) each. Whereas it seems I could buy new in the USA for less.

I may look at the Lithium ion replacements, I did not realise that they were retro compatible.

We have ran 18v Dewalt tools since they came out. Used to, we could have them rebuilt for about half the price of purchasing new batteries. Now, the price to have them rebuilt is about the same as purchasing a 2 pack from Lowes or Home Depot ($99 usd).

As mentioned above, make sure you get the XRP batteries. Well worth the extra little cost.

NiMH hold their charge much longer than NiCAD when not in use. I think they also hold more power than NiCAD

I too am needing a new pair of Dewalt 18v batteries. Based on what I have read the XRP are the best option. Correct?
Is there anyplace I can purchase the replacement cells and rebuild myself? I see the new battery "kits" on eBay but their cost is greater than simply buying new battery packs.

From what I have seen, the DeWalt Nicad batteries are of three types. A black body, a compact black body, and a black body with a yellow top, which are also the XRP batteries, and are marked as such. Lowes has two XRP for $99, and the only place I have found less expensive is Amazon around Christmas when a pair is around 25% off. The compact black body battery is what you get in the $99 drill kit.

I have one of the fancy Metabo chargers with a Refresh mode that handles NiCd, NiMH and Lithium batteries. The directions state that the refresh mode can be used for both NiCd and NiMH but not Lithium. I don't know whether Dewalt offers the same thing in Europe, but you might want to look into it since the chargers are also usually the 15 minute Ultra Rapid type.

You are welcome. I have been restructuring a set of trusses in the attic of my shop for the last two days, in preparation for the installation of a hoist rail, and have used the hell out of my DeWalt battery tools. I hate dragging cords and hoses along with me while working.

Hey thanks. Ordered them this morning.

That gives me a 3rd battery for ~$20 more than the best price for 2. Since I have a 4 piece set of the Dewalt 18v tools this can be handy.

Problem.... Today I received a box containing one battery. If you now click the link above their price for 3 batteries is $303, not $106. I would not have paid $106 for one battery.

I called just after 5:00 and got no answer. I just sent a response to my email confirmation which states I bought 3 batteries. Lets see how they respond to my complaint.

This purchase through Amazon was through a company named Bargain the People in NJ. Today they apologized for the incorrectly listed product, gave me a full refund and let me keep the one 18V battery.

For me this is a very good resolution and I am greatful for their excellent customer service. I can say my experience with this company is excellent and I would not hesitate to order from them again.

Man, I am glad that all worked out in your favor. I felt bad for pointing out the link, after reading what happened. I for one have been very satisfied with all my Amazon purchases, through all their suppliers. I have been buying from Amazon hard over the last year or so, and most of my DeWalt items have come through them.
