Can someone explain why someone added all these straps (4) to this 1902 Williamson vise? Was this done to prevent the swival? Metal fatigue... cracks... or what? Also, does anyone know the original color of the Williamson 1902 vise1772144428602.png?1772144496790.png

I can't answer the first question, although I would say your initial assessment looks feasible. As for the color, all the Williamson double swivels I have seen on the Vises thread were red. You would likely get more responses on that thread.

Those straps appear to be a repair after it cracked.

Is that a crack?

I see something similar on the other side too.
