Here is an old motor I got for free.

It's a Sunlight Motors 1/3 HP.

Doing a little research on the web, I've concluded that is was made in 1933.

One loose wire was all that was wrong.

Cleaned it up, painted it, and it runs so smooth.

Love the way it sounds when it's winding down.

Looks great but 1933? What year did Edison discover electricity?

One good thing, it was before the chi manufacturing exodus.

Seriously though, it looks real neat. What's with the strange keyway in the drive shaft. That's really unusual.

"In 1933 Sunlight was acquired, for $665,000, by Delco Products Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors. Delco Products was made a division of GM and Sunlight's motor manufacturing was relocated from Warren to Dayton."

This one was made in Warren, by Sunlight Electrical Div. of General Motors.

Great job. Keep up the good work. Junk new stuff and reapair/reuse the old !
The pop-rivets holding the nameplate look awkward?
Were the original rivets also pops or something else.
I have a bunch of old brass rivets with a "thread" in the shank. Designed to hold stuff like that in the old days.
If you let me know the hole dia I may have some that fits, would be happy to send to you.

Best regards

Um... Edison didn't discover electricity. You might want to google Tesla and Edison, as it relates to electric motors.

To the OP: That is a GREAT looking little motor! What are your plans for it?

Sometimes stuff is just too cool to leave alone, and once it looks like yours, I think it's socially acceptable to just leave it on a shelf right above the bench in the shop. "Hey, nice motor... got any plans for it?" No. "Yeah, I wouldn't either."

It is going to power a vintage bandsaw.

A 30's motor, driving a 50's bandsaw, sitting on a 60's tool cart.

Oh.. low blow but I guess I started it.:)

I'm still curious about the output shaft and the odd machining on it. Any idea of it's original intended use?

It looked to me to have been altered.

The rest of the shaft was rusty, but the cone shaped tip was clean and shinny.

I didn't get a chance to talk to the previous owner.

Thanks for the offer.

Replacing the rivets would mean taking the thing apart again.

I think I'll let them go as is. I might remove the white paint off the heads.
