Well after 5 years I've outgrown my Morton building and its time to add another building to expand my shop space. A local property came up for sale this spring and after driving past it and day dreaming about the space it would offer and the chance to recreate a vintage service station, I finally gave in and stopped to talk with the owner about the property. The original front portion of the building was a gas station built in 1935. It was added onto during the 40's giving it 90+ feet of shop space. At some point it was used by the Montgomery Ward store, which was right beside it, as their auto service center. During the late 70's the building under went a renovation turning it into retail space. My plan is to return the building back to its roots and recreate a vintage service station in the front and use the rear 60 foot section as shop space.

On the gas station recreation I went back and forth between making it a Sinclair or a Pure Oil station. I settled on Sinclair because I felt the green would look the best with the brick and the availability of original signage . I'm looking to stick with the late 40's early 50's era. I have purchased an original 42" double sided porcelain sign for the building. It should arrive sometime in the next week or so.

I picked up a wayne 505 pump for out front. They came out in the early fifties and have provisions for a globe on top. This one is very solid with a killer patina. I almost hate to paint it, but it'll look nice in Sinclair green and white with an HC globe.

At this point this is all I have to share. I should be taking possession in the next 4 to 6 weeks and then the fun will begin. I set up a facebook page I will be updating as well so all you facebookers feel free to check it out.

That's a gem! Can't wait till you turn it back to a service station. I'm in for the updates as well.

I'm in for the ride!:bubbrubb:

That pump is gonna look really great once you're done with it.

So, in the first photo, the tall wall to the right of the building...was that part of the Montomery Ward store?

Correct, it was a shared wall between the buildings.

This is a pic taken around 1920 of the corner my building is on. The car that you can see the back of parked on the sidewalk is the front of my property. The Nash/Dodge/Chevrolet dealership building became the Montgomery Ward store. I was told by an oldtimer in town it still had the vehicle elevator in the building when M/W had it. I'm not sure when that building was torn down, it was gone when I moved to the area in 2004.

Here is a present day pic of the corner. Photo cred Google Maps

Very interesting. So it looks like where the M/W building was is now a vacant lot? I see that the two buildings further down the street are still there.
It looks like a quite a bit changed on the other side of the street.

I'm in to watch this thread under one condition....

the concrete Easter basket has to go.

Watching as well but what will happen to that basket?

The flower basket is somewhat of a local landmark...so I hear :dunno: After the building was renovated in the 80's it was used as a flower shop for many years. That is when the basket was cast in the location it sits. The current owner said some lady left him a voice message that she would be interested in having it if the buyer of the building didn't want it. I have no idea if its solid concrete or hollow on the inside...moving it will probably be an adventure in its self. More than likely it'll end up busted up and hauled off to the landfill...Unless somebody on here wants a pretty awesome flower pot for FREE. You pick up..you load, but its Free for the taking

If some lady locally wants it, write up a contract and have her responsible for any damages and clean up if her loading process fails. A $250 deposit till it's off your property should pay for a dumpster to haul it off.

Not a lot going on since I haven't taken possession of the building yet. I did buy the matching wayne 505 gas pump last night at an estate sale. Not quite as good as condition as the phillips pump, but the shell is solid. Its missing a few things that are all reproduced like the lead signs on the side and it will need a new hose and glass. It came from a Texaco station that was in a town about 15 miles nw of me. One good thing it still had one of the original Texaco porcelain pump plates in decent condition. I believe it is an earlier 505 because it has a cast iron base and doesn't have the ad glass.

The porcelain pump plate dated 8-1-51

The pumps will be restored to Sinclair colors the HC will be green/white and the ethyl wil be red/white. Both will have the globes. Hers's a bad pic for reference

My sign left New York state headed towards Iowa Wednesday hopefully FedEx Freight is gentle with it

Interesting thread, and I will be following along with your progress.

I presume you plan to have your gas pumps and signs etc. outside. Do you have any concerns about theft or vandalism? The reason I ask is, obviously vintage gas pumps etc. are highly valuable, as are their parts. I would be very leery about leaving them accessible where something could happen to them.

A long time family friend had a vintage pump displayed outside his house on a residential street. While he was out one day, someone drove into his driveway, pried the pump off its mounts, and stole it. Value was something like $2K or more, not counting the hours of his labor restoring it.

For the most part no I'm really not to concerned about it. This building is in smalltown Iowa on a main downtown street that is well lit and highly visible. That being said there are going to be some security measures taken to protect the building and it contents that I'm not going to discuss publicly.

What an awesome endeavor! Your talent will really shine through on this one. If you need help restoring any smalls, hit me up -- it'd be an honor.

Thanks for the offer I'll keep it in mind if I need any powdercoating done in the future.

I went and picked up my sign from the freight terminal after work today and thankfully it made the trip safely. For being a 70+ year old sign its in pretty good condition. Done a quick photoshop to show where I think I am going to hang it on the building. With the way the building is set on a corner lot it will be visible from any angle.

Great signs and i'm looking forward to this build, Sinclair or Phillips 66 are both great brands but i think Sinclair's colours will work well with the building as well.

Sign looks good.

I see you have a long walk to the parts store. Will you be able to remove some of the parallel parking in front of the bay doors?

Wow, I don't know how I missed this thread. Looking forward to seeing the buildup of your new place for sure.

Were you able to get any inside pics of it yet?

One of the best neighbors a guy can have  I am going to go to the city and see about having the parking taken out in front of the doors. It shouldn't be an issue there is plenty of other parking available in the area.

I have some pics of the inside, but decided not to post them out of respect for the current owner. He sells men's clothing (suits) and used the building as his home base where he stored his inventory. Here is a pic of the very front which would have been the original gas station.
