Another craigslist score! I need to finish the base and shelf, but I couldn't wait to use it! I thought I'd through out a pick. I didn't do any before pics, sorry.

Very nice.....is that original paint?

It looked like it could have been but the paint left on the head was pretty bad. It was the same color as what is on the base and shelf. The paint I used was a lighter grey hammertone. I know its not the exact same as the darker paint that came originally. It worked great to make the stand holding the engine my son is working on. But without a speed reducer it was turning to fast for a 1/2" hole.

Nice drill press. I picked up a similar Walker Turner DP900 drill press that was made in 1947. I've got all new bearings for it and will start restoration soon.

Don't know if you saw it, but there is a excellent thread on another forum that follows complete restoration of one of these. Lots of photos and good helpful hints.

I did see that thread, was really great and it let me know the drill press wouldn't look bad if it was a lighter grey. Makes the detail come out. Im looking for the charger to my real camera so I can take some better pics.

K & K, Did you remove the bearing retainer from the head above the front pully when you were rebuilding your WT drill press? If so, how did you remove it. Mine is rusted stuck. I would prefer to remove it in order to clean and relube the pully bearings.

Thanks,

Im pretty sure the inner quill bearings in the head of any walker turner drill press require special tooling to install and remove. Not the top bearing above the pully, the lower one.

Not trying to remove the bearings from inside the front pulley. Rahter trying to remove the bearing retainer that comes in from the top and is held in place with two setscrews coming in from the side. From the pics you posted, your press has the same style retainer as my press. I believe this retainer drops in from the top of the front housing in order to hold the top of the front pully in place. This retainer needs to be removed in order to remove the pulley assembly for cleaning, luybricating and belt installation.
Thanks for your help. Rick
