1942 Monarch questions

This is from a local CL ad; Any guesses on size?

"This lathe was produced for the War Board in 1942. There's a brass plate that says so. It is 8' chuck to tail post. It has a small hole in the head, about 2". It has one lever that was broken in transit and needs to be reattached. The motor is 3 phase 220. I called the manufacturer (Monarch) and was told that all parts are still available. If anyone buys it, they must move it. It's extremely heavy, and my driveway is not paved. so it's hard to use equipment rollers on it. However, if you can get the rollers, I have enough plywood and metal plate to cover it. It works GREAT, on 3 PHASE!"

Also has 14'x4' for size, the only pic the seller sent is in outlook word and I can't figure out how to move it so I can post it. The lathe is from the Cabot Corp that made gun barrels during WWII and Korea.

What are you trying to figure out the weight?

I'm guessing 8 feet between chuck and tailstock and 14 feet total length? Probably 10k lbs or more?

Not really much to go on here, could be as low as 5500 lbs, to as much as 10K. Have a 16 X 54 that is just over 4K.

Hard to guess without a photo. Probably a 14" or 16" machine judging by the through hole. Likely not too terribly heavy. 5-6k as a wild *** guess.

The seller sent one pic, then told me his looks like the pic he sent only covered with boxes of stuff.

A 1942 vintage Monarch may be a useful machine for a small private shop, or not, depending on the turning work you might plan to do.

They are, generally, some of the best lathes ever built, in that general size range, with the famous 'Monarch helical headstock' and 'hardened ways', but......'condition is everything'.

If you've work for it, and it is in good serviceable condition, its a wonderful find......but if its an abused or badly worn machine, or missing parts, it could be more trouble than its worth, even if gotten for just hauling it away. (someone rebuilding an old Monarch may be very interested in it as a 'parts machine', if its worn or incomplete, tho,,,,just as one example, I would like to find a clutch cover and one of the original taper attachment covers for my 14" WAA Monarch....if it goes for parts, let me know.)

That description is far too vague, by the way. There should be a brass plate on the headstock with the model designation, such as 'CK' or 'CKK', 'WAA', 'CW', etc, the nominal swing size 12/14.5, 14/16.5, etc., and 'distance between centres'.

Get more info.......can it be run, where it now is? Could you do good close-up photos of the machine, particularly the ways near the headstock? What tooling, if any, is with the machine?
