You shouldn't be proud of your actions today. Go give the seller at least $100 on top of the $40 you already paid.

I don't get it. They agreed to a price on an old power tool that was missing parts.

Ya will I must say you are not me you don't work 6 days a week to make ends meat and have 6 kids and a wife to support and you don't live in a 3 bedroom duplex, and wish things could be better! I do not judge people and never have I also never take advantage of people "Carma's a *****". She was moving and no one was looking at it. she was just going to donate it. So I with what I know I can afford gave what I could afford......

I'm also surprised at the guys who come out swinging for the moral majority when they barely know half the story....

Nice to see the OP stuck around regardless and showed us more pics.

If you go to Searspartsdirect.com and enter the model number of your drill press they may still sell that part. They do for mine and it looks identical to yours. Probably pricey though. Old hardware stores or farm supply stores may be a better bet.

nice looking DP. at $40 it's worth just having in the garage, working or not.

but this, and i didn't see where you said you needed this for work...

just makes me wonder why your buying ANYTHING that doesn't put $$ in your pocket or food on the table...
just my opinion...

Judging other people on an Internet forum, who only came here to share their find and ask for help with parts, doesn't put $$$ in anyone's pocket or food on their table either, last I checked. :dunno:

Geez. Cut the guy some slack.

this whole story started with the OP's story of how he played the old woman to get a killer deal. when it was pointed out that some people question the morality of this, the OP defended it with his situation. don't want it commented on, don't put it out there.
and really, it's only ok to positively comment? cool...

you **** <<<< there you go, standard garage journal praise

And it turned out she wasn't really that old -- if I recall it being said that she appeared to be in her 40s -- maybe I read it wrong. Anyway she, of course, was trying to play the dollar game also and prolly wouldn't have gotten any more than he paid. I wouldn't have considered it at 40 bucks after seeing the pics and reading about the problem it has.

And that is why I dont post much on boards like this. The guy paid a fair price for the condition of the drill. And he gets a hard time from most of the posters.

Yeah at first I thought he was outta line because of the way he did it, kinda still do, but the DP was not even worth 40 in my opinion. So what goes around comes around. He did OK if he is willing to put in good condition.

OH by the way this is a very good board -- just in case you are dissapointed with it. There are a lot of knowledgable folks here

Wait, wait, I KNOW this quote...."How to Win Friends and Influence People" right?:lol_hitti

Seriously dude. I am one of the ones that defended you but you need to let this stuff roll off your back. No one insulted your mother! Opinions are like A-Holes - everyone has one and they all stink (unless you agree with them, of course). I think you need to give less info about your purchases, or thicken up your skin a bit.

So the motor's got a rusty trim band there....that can refinished and painted. How's the rest of the motor internals look?

Electrolysis is a great way to remove rust and it's easy and fun to do. All you need is an old home battery charger (in some of the info I read when I began doing this the newer chargers don't seem to work as well as the old ones without automatic LOL don't even know what it's called anymore), a tub of appropriate size, water, washing soda or baking soda ( it has been said that washing soda is better but I have had good luck with baking soda).

Build a metal band to surround the part preferrably all the way around the inside of the tub with a tab coming up above the liquid that you will put in there. I just used sheet metal from an old Air cond duct and cut a 2" strip then pop riveted the ends together then pop riveted a tab to rise above the solution.

The solution can vary I started with a 1/2 cup per gallon and mixed, then increased until my charger reached 3 to 4 amps.

Connect the neg cable to the part using something like a spring clamp with some 10 guage wire to come up out of the solution, this protects the clamp on your charger cable.

After all is ready connect the neg to the part then the pos to the surrounding electrode as DC current flows from neg to pos watch it bubble and turn the solution foamy red. it's fun and works well.

I am going to try to attach pics or at least a link to photo bucket but I'm not very good at it.

Wow It worked ---The electrolysis set up pics are the last two.

The wood you see in the pic is silver maple from my yard that I cured for about 6 months and I have completed the new wood handles for this project also using the wood from my own tree.

Hope this helps with any rust removal and it is fun and a learning experience.

The rest of the motor is great. I found some brand new sealed bearings, and I am just cleaning up the outside of the motor to get ready for paint. The motor turns great by hand. WOW I like that Electrolysis that is AWSOME. I think I will try it. I kinda used my grinder with a wire wheel on it and I took of some of the rust but I am afraid I might have taken off to much I will try the Electrolysis and see if it works out. Do I need to take off the motor ID tag??? or not??? Thanks to all the great people on here for help. It takes me a while to get to it cause I work so much. Slowly but surely.

It will work with the tag on but it will not get anythiing that is under the tag. If the tag has coloring (paint or other type of coloring) that has rust under it the color will come off. So I would remove it then reattach with identical or as similar as possible fasteners. I am assuming they are small rivets.

Good Luck

A couple of weeks again I found a Craftsman DP on CL that a lady had at a yard sale. I called her to see if you still had it and how much. She said because to was "Vintage" I was asking $175.00 for it. I said I would come and look at it. So when I did I did not tell her who I was and it looked pretty sweet. So I asked her what is the lowest she would go. She told me again that because of it beling "Vintage" she was asking $175.00 but That I would take 75.00 for it. So I just paid no attention to her. When I walked away she yelled out ok how about 60.00 then I drove off. A couple hours later she called me and said are you going to come and look at it I am asking 60.00 for it. So I said well how about 40.00 so she said ok. at that point I hailed *** over there to get it. SCORE. and it works.

If anyone was a part number 18915 return spring the one on this is damaged. also This model 80 from the factory has no knobs on the feed handle. If anyone has 2 of them. I would pay you for them Thanks and I will post Pics soon. Chris.

Ok this is an old post but I had to chime in. I don't see anywhere in the post where he "took advantage" of a little "old" lady. I don't understand this line So when I did I did not tell her who I was and it looked pretty sweet. Who are you an Antique dealer? She wanted $175, he asked is that the lowest, she said $75, he walked she yelled out $60, he drove off. She called him and said $40 he then went and got it. Sounds like a good transaction, he didn't rip off an old lady, unless in your 40's is old. The worse thing was he lost it a bit in a post and used the FBomb not really called for, and I think I would have painted it closer to the original color. But it's not mine , it looks good and good score on the DP have fun with it.

I just looked at a picture of a drill press that a buddy of mine wants to give to me...it's that same machine, but my price is free. I guess that's a good enough deal.

My DP arrived today. The original color of grey is under the base. Mine appears to work well. It has a keyless chuck and a 1/3 horse Dunlap motor, so it's a little different than what the OP has.
I'm constructing a small repair shop for my staff at work so this little machine should come in handy.
