Hello,
I recently bought a Craftsman drill press model 103.23140. It’s equipped with an original 1/2 hp 1725 rpm capacitor start motor model 115.6962. The motor runs great, but I have to hand spin it to get it moving. Looking at the capacitor it appears to be leaking. Its a flat style 124-140ish MFD rated built in 1947. Has anyone found a suitable replacement for these old caps and how have you mounted them? Thanks

A modern day capacitor with the same mfd rating is a suitable replacement. One in that size should be relatively small. Looking at pics on your drill press online, it looks like you might be able to hide it under the base of the motor.

There are a number of variations on cap start motors but many use a centrifugal switch that connects the cap to the motor until the motor approaches full speed. While you are at it, make sure the switch contacts are clean and the counterweight springs and the weights are intact and free to move. A modern cap may be smaller than the original so mounting it should be no problem. It can be anywhere near the motor but you want to make sure the wires are well protected if they are external. It is usually either the swirch or the cap if it needs a push.
