Hello All,

I just picked up this 14” Delta Milwaukee drill press at a very small estate sale along with a 1967 Powermatic 143 bandsaw. The drill press has a serial number of 49-6695 so I’m assuming it was made in 1947. It has the third set of pulleys for slow speed. It has a Jacob’s 6A chuck and original chuck key. It’s in excellent condition for a drill press built in the 1940’s. The motor is not original and is a 56 frame Dayton wired for 115VAC. There is no on/off switch. I have a couple questions;
1) Was this drill press built in 1947?
2) Other than the aftermarket motor, fo you see anything that stands out as not original?
3) While I’ll likely keep this drill press for personal use, what would you estimate its current value at?

I paid $650 for the DP220 and the Powermatic 143 as a lot. The 143 was built in 1967 and is in great shape and only needs belts and tires. Bearings are all good on the guides, arbors and transmission, paint is good with light wear marks.

Thanks

There was a date on the underside of the table on my DP220. Yours looks like someone spent time on it to restore it. No belt guard? Mine came with an O.E. one, evidently the belt guards are hard to come-by, and they command a premium price.

Thanks for your reply. I looked under the table and no date code, only DP 200 cast into it. What do you think it’s worth in today’s market? I believe I got a decent deal at let’s say $150

Could you possibly post a pic of your DO 220 with the belt cover on it?

Thanks

I still have the original motor off my grandfathers delta. I have it mounted to a bench with an arbor on the shaft to hold a wire wheel.

I broke the spindle on the drill press notching roll bar tubing and wasn't able to locate the parts to repair it unfortunately.

@danogh nice example and yes it is from 1947. 1947 is the first year all Delta 14-in drill presses had the smaller index window as you have, the transition having started in 1946.
All previous 220s had a larger index window:

Very fortunate that you have the Delta slo-speed pulley, that pulley base has the upper attachment for the foot feet assembly. Here is a post from member @Tarnished of an outstanding example of a 220 with the complete foot feed assembly.

Please post images of your 220 on the Delta thread.

Hoorn,

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if the DP220 came with the rear belt guard in 1947? I have been searching for one but can’t seem to find anything. Also looking for the OEM Delta motor. Both seem to be scarce as hens teeth.

Two best characteristics of this DP220 were the belt cover was still on it, and no 'arc of shame.' I'd say $150 is probably a fair deal if you were to sell yours. I paid <$100 for mine at a thrift shop which sees little in the way of tools.
You wouldn’t consider selling the rear belt cover would you?

The belt guard would have been an accessory, it did not come with it standard. Indentation on the side of the guard was to accommodate the foot feet.
