Love your space. I wouldn't mind a Ducati one day either - even one that was not a super bike! :)

Today I scored a decent Craftsman / Columbian 4" bench vise w/ swivel base model #506.5188 on CL. It was made in the USA and is in great shape for being ~45 years old. It replaces a crappy old Harbor Freight vise bought back before I knew better and matches the rest of my Craftsman equipped garage well. I plan to mount it to the left corner of the workbench with the static jaw lined up right along both edges so that I can use it in either position.

Craftsman 4" bench vise w/ swivel base model #506.5188 circa 1970. Made under license in USA by The Columbian Vise & Manufacturing Company. Original paint in great condition for being 40+ years old. Not the industrial beast that some of you guys have but this little guy fits my little workbench and my little workshop just fine. My dad managed his entire adult life with a 3 1/2" Wilton so I don't think this will be a hindrance. And if I ever need a bigger vise I have the collective knowledge of GJ to point me in the right direction!

^^^Bolt threads are flush so I don't lose any skin on them.

Started fabricating a durable work surface for my rolling tool cabinet that normally resides under my work bench. The idea is that I can pull it out when I need some extra surface area. My shop is small so I need to do everything I can to maximize efficiency.

I started by cutting a 3/4" plywood base for the work surface

Then I cut out some 16ga sheet metal to cover it up.

It would have gone so much easier if I had a CNC laser and a large pan brake. Using simple tools (straight edge, jigsaw, file, angle grinder) I was able to cut out various pieces and fit them together. Initially I had planned to bend everything with my 30" HF sheet metal brake but it wasn't up to the task. It says 17ga capacity on the box. 16ga was asking too much of it so out comes the 5lb sledge hammer to bend things approximately into shape.

Next step is to weld all the pieces together without warping things and then grind smooth. I may end up glueing the sheet metal to the plywood base. Not sure yet.

Thanks all for the compliments!

I spent an hour mocking up cool corrugated steel sliding doors in SketchUp to hide the storage shelves only to have all that effort dashed when the application crashed while making the geometry a component. Stupid me didn't save often enough. D'oh!

Nice job. You've really transformed the room. I'm sure you can't wait to be finished and enjoy it without driving 45 minutes to work on your hobby.

Metal work top for rolling tool cabinet finished. In a small work shop you've got to make the most out of every available surface.

And here's a taste of what I've got going on in the garage

Wheels finally done! Time to get my rubber mounted and get this bike a little bit closer to the starting line.

My "new" Aprilia RS50 tucked safely away in the garage. New bike next to old bike. Place smells like a proper garage now. 2-stroke smoke is one of my favorite smells! Only thing better is 110+ octane race fuel exhaust and burning rubber!

Saved that pliers idea to my "garagejournal ideas" folder. Well done! Always impressed with the layouts and use of space in the single-garage builds.

Look forward to seeing more!

Subscribed! Fellow MC nut enjoying what you are doing with the small space. I'm have started learning sketch up. Where do you get the "clip art" for cabinets, lifts etc?

Hey there, great job! Luv how you "penciled" everything out before beginning, I did the same with graph paper and colored tissue paper. Can I ask what type of black shelving units you have? I want to get something very similar but many items I find seem to be chinsy and or overly expensive. Again, great job, keep us posted on any new changes.
