1965 Craftsman Tool Box

Picked this up at a sale for $12. Cover is stamped 1965. Stripped, primed, painted and added a new lock. Saved another from the dumpster. Don't really need it, but not sure of the value. Very heavy box.

Those mid boxes are actually very desirable! I got one at a estate sale last year, and wish i would have tried harder to get the second one that was available.

I have seen them forsale for $60 with nice original paint and a few minor dents on top. Thought that was a good deal.

Could you please post where on the top lid you saw the date marked? These mid drawer Waterloo made chests do not have date marking in the usual places.

Pretty sure that box is 70's. The 3 and 4 drawer versions were much later being introduced than the 2 drawer. No date codes that I have heard of being found on them.

$60 is usually a great price for them. For people in the know, $100-200 depending on condition is usual for around here.

It was red, but the craftsman badge was white

I thought the original color would be the red n grey with the old V emblem.

That looks to be the Craftsman part number

Yes, parts number, not date. The intermediate chests were 2 drawer up through 1971. OPs chest is 72 or later.

From the Craftsman tool catalogs I looked at , the grey/red 3 drawer version of this box was made from 1972-1975

My roller is stamped 0173 and is Grey/Red.

Yes, top and bottoms were stamped with dtaes, but not the middle boxes

Yep. My red/grey upper that I bought new has the more recent Craftsman label and was made 0177. My two boxes are only four years apart despite their very different appearance.
