I think that part is called the "Quill" Can we see a pic of the press ?? IF it's one of the old King -Seely or Atlas built ones there's plenty of 'em around. I have one of each !! Can you tell if the quill is bent , or is it wobbling in worn out bushings .....?

Been there. What you have to determine is wether the spindle or the chuck is bad. Can you get the chuck off? It should be on a taper and be able to wedge it off. Once it is off then determine if the spindle is running true. If it is then your in luck and can just replace the chuck which is a common part to all drill presses. Go here and and check it out;

If the spindle is bent then you have bigger problems. Sometimes the nose can be turned straight, or used parts secured.

yes 1965 smart ellics haha sorry. it is the part that the chuck slips directly on. and a roll pin for the chuck goes through it holds the chuck on its tapered and the bearings go though it the bearings seem to be good and you can tell where it has been beaten on before when I took the chuck off. but was beaten were maybe someone tried straightening it? I am not at shop right now therefore I cant get pics right now.. thanks again for the help

co'mon I know someone can help here!

Your thread, your tool, your way of going about it. That the results you desire are not forthcoming prompted some thoughts for future reference:

1. "and now it doesnt spin true." You got some decent answers to a vague question. Define your request. EXACTLY what help are you requesting? How much runout does the spindle have, measured where by what means?
2. Photos - you want more detailed info and advise, but haven't taken the time to post photos of your own DP illustrating what you have and the part you want fixed.
3. This is not the best forum for old machine tool help anyway. The Old WoodWorking Machine forum http://owwm.org/viewforum.php?f=1 will have ten times the expertise, experience and parts. A few of us here are over there occasionally also. FWIW, if you go on OWWM, read their rules first. And their rules are strictly enforced. What goes on every day here, much less over on HAMB, will get you whacked by the moderators.

good luck,

jack vines
