Glad to see you back Randy and that thing is COOL! Thank Gawd for the long wheelbase, but I'd bet anything built that sturdy will still jar your eye teeth loose at every little bump in the road. And you'll be grinning from ear to ear!

John

Thanks! My 1966 F600 FireTruck drove amazingly well! It had original 50+ yr old tires on it. After sitting a month one would have to drive it a bit to get the tires to go round again but it was awesome! The brakes were fantastic. This truck even has factory power steering!

I’d be building a big low rider on airbags.

Will wait to get it here then decide what to do with it. Obviously will have to let something else go to have $ for my crazy Ideas what I would like to do with it.

Trying to find a way to get it home now. Shipping is a BUNCH more than I had hoped/expected. Getting a few shocking quotes now. I would need to trade in Eco2, Rainbow and orange truck just to pay for shipping . .

Sounds to me like you need to fly up there and road trip it home. I guarantee it'll be an interesting ride back!

I'd also be willing to bet that a few of us here would be interested in participating, some probably on the route could pitch in if you got jammed up, etc.

Ideally I would love to drive it home the nearly 1400 mi.

It needs all 8 wheel cylinders, master cylinder at a minimum on the brake side.

Unknown about engine at this time but for sure had at least a long block done with only around 400 miles on it. Don't think its seized as was using clutch with it in gear for brakes when I was getting towed by tractor.

Unknown how cooling system is. Two possible different water pumps but I found both NOS.

Fuel system pretty toast but I found NOS carb kit and NOS fuel pump. Not sure how bad fuel tank is but doesn't smell very good. Pretty short line from tank to pump could easily be replaced.

Hoping the 2 spd diff is not stuck in low range or top speed maybe 40-45 mph probably not good for a freeway as most have 45 minimum speed.

I would need to rebuild the brakes and have proper tools, large jacks and that would be difficult unless someone in Spokane area could help out and let me borrow them.

The Holley 2v carb rebuild I would need a gallon pail of carb cleaner then leave there when done but I guess I could put on back of truck.

With brake re-do and fuel system I think chances are good it would make the trip.

Only issue is if something did go wrong with huge storage fees and tow bills I would most likely lose the truck. Hoping nothing would go wrong but . . .

Highest quote I got was 12,000 but listed it on uship yesterday with quotes in the 5000-5500 area which is way to much for what I have $$ for.

The front tires and wheels were nearly 1700.00 alone. A must have & that would give me 2 spares although not sure if enough tread to be road legal.

Another issue is cost of airplane tickets, rental car, hotel and other expenses. Then if for some reason I could not get truck road worthy . .

Lots to think about and wish I had a big chase vehicle so if something did go wrong I could just tow the rest of way. YouTube video's may be enough to pay for that adventure of driving it home? LOL

If I had to I could sell the 1965 F600 to help pay for trip. I do have the 4000 mi 3.5 ecoboost engine and full rolling chassis I could sell too. Just so much time involved to make it all happen.

Getting so close on first test drive for F100Raptor.

The logistics would be complicated, but not insurmountable. A monster chase vehicle would be awesome, but difficult to line up, of course.

If you planned far enough in advance, you could try to map out several potential emergency repair points -- someone who is willing to lend you a bit of driveway, parking lot, or yard for you to make some repairs until you can get back on the road.

YouTube would help pay for it, but you don't get $ up front, of course.

Keep us posted. If the timing is right, I'd like to participate.

Randy, crazy idea here. If you’re planning on a new Ford chassis, why not hire out someone where the truck is at to remove the cab and front end and crate them up and ship it to you? No need to pay for shipping weight of parts that will be scrapped anyway?

I did look into that possibility but it would be a ton of hours that would exceed the cost of shipping. I also need parts for the 1965 F600 I bought a week before this one. Then the hassle of getting rid of all the metal etc. 100 per hour or more it would not take long to add up the $$. Just to move the truck this size I was charged 100.00 per mile!

If one added up the cost of taking it apart I would still have the cost of getting other items too me. I would lose the 1700 spent on tire n wheels etc.
Its worth the extra cost to get it here just so I can drive it.

I do not have the $ to even start the restoration on the N700 and would actually like to use it as a driver to help clear up all the extra junk collected in my yard. The last late model F150 I had hauled away brought me 550.00 but used someone else truck I gave them 50%

Appreciate the idea but promised the 90 yr old guy and his family when I got it running I would let them know and maybe he could have that last ride in it.

The new chassis is a total dream at this time and with ZERO $ saved and the unknown I simply may just keep as is a long time or just upgrade axles brakes and maybe suspension with a late model 6.7 Diesel. The current frame is in great shape. Very few miles on all new brakes etc. From sitting now the brake hydraulics need gone over.

I really cannot start on it until I finish Orange Truck, Rainbow Ranger and at least get a good start on finishing Eco2 plus I have the late model F350 I need to deal with.

In middle of a major yard re-do and paying big $$ to haul mulch, gravel etc it would be fun to do it with this old N Dump that is currently in middle of friends driveway plugging his wifes parking spot and blocking the garage.

Thanks Scott! Nothing I would like more than to get it running/driving and drive it home. That was plan and why I ordered the new tires keepiing old fronts for spares and ordering brake parts thru the local napa up there. Because I did not pick up the brake parts they cancelled order even though they were paid for. I simply could not get someone to pick them up. Every one is "Too Busy". I get that, I am too these days.

Wife did tell me I could use some "family" $ to get the truck here and it's enough to go fetch the truck but just too much on my own with no tools or place to work on it although I could probably use friends yard where it's currently at as I am sure they would like the eyesore gone.

All my life I have wanted to do something exactly like this take a old hulk and drive it across country. Only project of mine I have ever gone long distance with is Eco1. That turned out just fine! I put over 11k miles on it in just a few summer months.

No better vehicle do do it in than only known '66 N Crew! If I could gather up some help and some tools to do it I would be game. At this point waiting to hear back from friend if engine turns over ok. I ran out of time and did not have correct sized socket to put on balancer bolt. That would be huge in making the decision as I cannot "assume" its ok. I would do like I did with RedRed ranger if not good comp on all cylinders just use a bunch of Kroil overnight. Give it a good tune up, add the new fuel pump, clean fuel lines, rebuild carb, rebuild hydraulics on brakes etc. Would need a tire/wheel jack to pull wheels off together to get at hydraulics.

It was full of wasps when I was there and hope I got them all. It was a swarming with them.

If I had the N Crew at my shop just a couple days it would not take long to make it go a longer distance. Much more of a challenge flying 1400 miles across country and getting it done starting out with no tools or jacks . . It could be done yeah, hoping but will see how it progresses this week.

Process of elimination for me. First check to see if engine turns free. If so probably change oil, filter do a compression check and if that's good do the tune up, fuel system if it runs as good as I expect then do the brakes a bit of test drive to see how cooling system is and if all a go start the drive towards home. Of course check or maybe change the fluids in the diff and transmission. When I was using clutch as brake the clutch felt weird hope its ok if not would need to remove trans and replace clutch If I could actually find one. Think its 13" or something huge vs a typical small truck 10" or 10 1/2"

It did look like the fan came in contact with radiator too but unsure if it leaks or not or what shape cooling system is in.

Being a crew cab it could hold 4 people pretty comfortable . . Sure would be fun to video it all too.

Anyone in the Pacific Northwest need a vehicle hauled from phoenix?
Have a large semi with a 53' Landol available.

He would pick up and deliver my truck then haul whatever back to Seattle or points in between.

Or maybe you have something that needs hauled from seattle to phx?

Re: 1966 F100 EcoBoost Engine Swap & 1966 427 Project

So happy to see your back and with the start of a fantastic new project.

Thanks! Really looking forward to doing this truck!

That is the coolest old truck I have ever seen!! Can't wait to follow this build!!

Thanks! I think its for sure the coolest truck I have ever owned although the 5300 mi F600 was pretty "slick".

Ultimate goal for this N crew is upgrade at least drivetrain then build a custom camper on back that looks like a new 1966 From outside but modern inside.

Many many options for this but ideally would be a new 2022 F550 chassis
with a 5/60 warranty, add the cab restored or not then build the new camper on back. The chassis I am looking at is 351.4" overall. The full cab length is 122" so that would give me That would give me a 19.12' Camper plus portion over cab. It would also allow me to tow up to 7700 lb and give me a 22,000 GVW.
The new rolling chassis 100% complete is 6300 lb.

Or, I have looked at very low mile late model chassis/trucks too.

Currently there is a 2018 Penske truck with only 30k miles on it avail right now. It has a 6.7 big truck Cummins in it 350 hp 785 TQ. it would probably be a fraction of cost but no full warranty like the new one.

New Chassis would have the new 7.3 Godzilla gas with 6R140 HD auto.
Ford fleet has sent me the full chassis builders guide for 2022 so I have spent a lot of time with it. I also have full ordering guide with all needed codes etc.

For now it's all a dream but will see how it goes once I get the truck home.

Just call me "Maytag" as in wishy washy at least my mind is still changeable,
After sky high shipping quotes I am once again leaning towards driving it home.

This evening a friend (where truck is at) said he would try to turn engine over a couple revolutions by hand. If that's ok the plan would be to rescue it if I can round up help for repairs and to drive it home.

Unless of course I am able to find proper shipper.

I think it would be an epic trip!

You're like me with the Kroil -- just used some a few days ago on the '69 Bronco that hadn't run in decades. Running great now!

Re: 1966 F100 EcoBoost Engine Swap & 1966 427 Project

Not so good news!

Had someone attempt to turn engine over. Even with a 4’ bar it will not turn.

Engine seized but unknown how bad or how many cylinders.

That puts a curve in it to drive home.

Time to order some Kroil and have it sent there...

looks like a bit better news early next week. Not to jinx myself so will keep quiet until then.

In the meantime a new vid is up on the F100Raptor build

Hello TW, I have been following your builds since about 2016. I've been in awe from day one. Your ability is out of this world. I have thought of commenting many times but just don't feel like I have that much to contribute. Anyway, if the news your were waiting for doesn't pan out, I may be able to help with transportation to/ from Spokane. If you are interested pm me.

Thanks much!

Love this new format on G-J!

This has been another roller coaster. One would think I have a sign on my back . .I love roller coaster rides!!

I had someone tell me they would pick up the truck in spokane on Monday and I bought a airplane ticket to meet them, help load then make the trip back to phoenix. Very late in evening with my bags packed I was to fly out of phoenix at 6 am. I got a text sorry I cant go direct to phoenix??? This was a very expensive no notice ticket non refundable. So Monday morning of course I do not go to airport and get on plane as it would have meant yet another expensive no notice ticket home.

Person supposed to haul says Ok I will pick up truck then return to seattle go to my grandma's funeral (not new news she died days prior) then leave seattle with truck on thursday or friday. Got a call when the party was 90 min out of spokane. I called a tow truck to help load as I was not going to be there.
Big rig to haul gets to house and says truck will only fit if I cut bumper off. Say what? I was told he had a flatbed with a 27' deck and truck is 26.5' long. At this point desperate said ok. I guess he didn't know how to use a tape measure. The tow truck just to pull it on quoted me 200.00 I thought very steep but said ok. A bit later I get a call from tow truck saying ok, truck is loaded ready to go. Hmm didn't buy that so called friends house where truck was at and she told me not only was the truck sitting in driveway but the semi and tow truck were both gone! Say what!?!? Supposedly both the tow truck and semi guys got into a disagreement yet trying to collect $$ Long story short I got absolutely NOTHING but cost me over 700.00.

More drama? Thought I was over that. Hands tied being 1400 mi away.

You might give these guys a call. They haul all over carrying who knows what.

https://riverbrooktrucking.com/
And here is where WoodsTruck comes into play. Thanks for tip! (I think, LOL)
I had called riverbrooktrucking and Josh seemed like he was trying to help. Nice guy He had sent message on monday that he found someone to haul but waiting for these other clowns I guess I missed the boat! not only did I lose 700+ $ but lost a possible shipper.

He asks if truck is ready to pick up I say yes since May 1st. BUT, I need to have details and am not allowing just anyone tow it just because they think they can with their VWDiesel pickup or what ever, maybe a 31hp 23 window vw with a trailer behind.

Tuesday He claims to have another possible on Wednesday. I said I want details who what when where why. Insurance? What type of truck? When will I get it?
I hear nothing back from him. Then later in day I get call from my friend saying a trucker called him and will be there in morning 7:00 am to pick up the truck!?!?!? Wait, I never authorized anyone to pick up truck without having certain info? Maybe a bit of communication here? My friend gives me number to this trucker. I call him and say: Hi, This is Randy I am looking for details on picking up truck. He says Randy the broker? I say no I am the owner. He says no you are not XXXXXX is! (My friends name where truck is at) It's no wonder my Anxiety is so far out there!

I have no clue if I am at top of the rollercoaster hill on way down way up but I sure ain't parked!

I finally get the info from Russ the trucker. Type truck: 2020 F350 with 40' trailer. Ok, when will you pick up truck and when will I expect delivery? Pickup 7 am you should have by noon on Friday. He gives me price 3k to my door. I give the ok. This was all in about 30 seconds. I hear nothing back as for some reason he thought I was not the owner. No show by 7:40 am I send him a text. Are you picking up truck today? 2 min later says yes almost there.

7:53 am I get text from friend. "On Location"

9:36 AM friend send pic of truck loaded and pic with Russ license plate. I run plate and it shows 2020 F350 WA state Commercial. I figure ok will wait to hear from "Russ" This is Wednesday morning. Russ had issue with his winch. Someone tried to steal it and removed bolts, cut wires but they jump it with friends car and get it loaded.

My friends wifes 32nd birthday.

Yesterday Thursday morning I had not heard a word from trucker Russ. I had grooves worn in shop floor pacing. Finally I think entire day has gone by to find it's only 8:11 am. I send Russ a text: Any update on arrival? 8:13 he replies Tomorrow morning... Early

Friday: Now I am up 4:45 waiting . . Hope it shows!

Edit Add: Wife stepped in with $$ allocated for something else to pay for shipping. Bless her!

Truck now unloaded and safely home!
What a TOTAL mess it was to get it here!
Trucker was way beyond excellent and between us finagled it to spot on hoist. Did have to cut a limb off of one of trees in front yard I wish was gone .

Now I can get back to the Orange truck then in between see if I can get the engine to crank on BIG N.

My G-J app worked great this morning but now quit so no pics for now

What a adventure! Great that it all came together.
Thanks! That was the "very short" version!
Looks like cylinders #1 and #5 are stuck. Kroil in them now for overnight. Put in gear and tried tugging with a winch and with my '66 F100 but engine stuck pretty good yet.

#1 piston at top so hard to fill with enough Kroil to get at topside of piston. Getting dark now but will make something I can thread in #1 & 5 plug holes where they both can be filled for a day or so.

Someone asked about size comparison.

‘66 f100 vs 1965 F600
‘66 N700 vs 1966 F100

What a sh*tshow it was getting it there but at least it made it!!!

Fingers crossed on getting the pistons un-stuck. Kroil is awesome stuff -- I use that too, along with some Marvel Mystery Oil.

Keep the updates coming!!!

Finally have proof which railroad bought truck new!

Just don’t ask how but I 100% saved the insignia on door!

Northern Pacific Railway bought truck.

Reason for the Salt Lake City, UT DSO on door it was closest DSO (ordering district)
To area it went to.

I spoke with a few NPR museum people and got a bunch of good leads.

Sounds like most likely truck was in Billings MT or possible Yellowstone.

How exciting would that be to find original historic photos?

Note NPR has same color Green/Silver rail cars and trucks!

A bit of “Magic Wand” did wonders saving that insignia.

The NPR had major change in 1990.
Taken over then truck sent to Burlington Northern 1990. The right front door is off a BN truck. It matches perfectly to 90 yr old guys story when he bought it early 1990.

Don’t think I posted prior.

All proper machine work done for the 393 cube FE for clone of my dad’s ‘66.

Zero deck, custom 9.0: 1 pistons. Original heads to truck with proper valve job.

Idle to 4000 rpm cam. Fully restored ‘66 390 GT carb. 406 shorty headers.

Few other tricks I will throw in too.

This will get the Mercury Script Aluminum valve covers I had made. Waited like 2 1/2 yrs to get.

Magic soap, or the sand paper trick used to get the white letters on the orange truck tail gate? That looks great to pin down the history of the truck... can't wait to see more!

Fascinating to tie that into America’s rail history. Good stuff.

Yep! I knew it was railroad but very cloudy which one. Right front door is Burlington Northern from another N series. After cleaning it more I can read nearly all writing.
Turns out BN bought out Northwest Pacific and truck was transferred from Billings or Yellowstone to Spokane. (Spoke with someone today from NPR museum)

Obvious drivers door original and I was amazed trying different things on door to try to reveal what was on it when new.
It was masked off then painted a heavy white paint of sorts. When they pulled off masking tape it removed some green paint and primer down to bare metal.

Thanks! Part of what I love to do and have learned to do over last 50yrs is try to bring stuff like this back without destroying stuff.

I thought for a few minutes that what do I have strong enough to remove cheap paint but not bother baked enamel and will not hurt vinyl type lettering. I came up with PPG 870 Reducer. Poured some on a course white cotton towel and BAM! I just kept wiping applying more 870. And within minutes it was dissolving white paint and making the insignia look new!

I then cranked my steam cleaner up to 250 deg and steamed a lot more of white off surrounding the decal.

Don’t think I posted pic after.

I then hit entire cab and engine bay with the hot water adding “Magic Soap” to engine & compartment.

Was using my old steamer the hotrodded version with jacked up fuel pressure and it gets to point of steam which is close to 250 deg.

7ee8bc0877365c0d445304e289a07467.jpg

This is after steam shot. Took away a lot of the oxidation on paint. Stayed away from the old insignia to preserve it. Next up I will apply more 870 until all the white is gone. Drivers door should buff up nicely. Left front fender and left hood side nice yet too. Bottom side of hood looks fantastic with grease pencil markings still there.

The door data tag spells out truck built mid June 1966 in Louisville KY another fantastic part of history!

That truck plant open I think from 1995 until 1969 when new Truck plant opened.

The special order 6 digit DSO is 739237

73 indicates Salt Lake City the 9237 will show ordering dealer.

Salt Lake City is closest ordering district to Billings/Yellowstone. So that means a dealer in that area ordered it for Northwest Pacific Railway.

Best guess after talking to a NPR Museum person. But no question close to that area.
Any further west and it would most likely had Seattle DSO.

I think it’s fascinating to find all this history and with a bit of detective work I am hoping to come up with photos of truck doing its thing! That would be icing on cake!

Crazy in just a few hours time how much info I got. All matching what prior 90 yr old owner was trying to convey.

Bringing that Insignia back to life was key!

Well there's two more great tricks. The reducer makes sense with your painting experience, but I had no idea that steam would take off so much oxidation. By the way are you thinking of (I think the term is patina truck) where you don't repaint just clean-up what's there and put a protective clear coat over it?
Looks better in every new pic.
