My buddy has a Snap On Tool Chest (2 boxes, upper & lower). The pictures are of it dirty, but we are cleaning it up good tomorrow. Will post new pics then. It is a 1967 (USA 67 on bottom). I didn't check the top for a number yet. He needs to sell it but I keep finding huge price variations. Since he has to sell it soon any help on value is appreciated. From up close, I would say it is in "Very Good Condition" (just dirty right now). Thanks!

From pictures they are not in "very good condition." Is the bottom box missing drawers or is it a slide in cover? Will know more if you add pictures of them cleaned up.

Hi Jules, welcome to GJ

Couple things.

1.) Price is very local market and thus location dependent. So... where are you located? What does your local craigslist look like. The used box market is very competitive.

2.) Not sure if I would agree with the "Very good condition" estimate, but I guess condition is subjective to some folks. Lets see what it looks like after you clean it up.

3.) Yep, bot boxes are 1960's boxes. Top is a KRA-56A, bottom is a KRA-377A. You appear to be missing the bottom space cover. That box had an option to add 3 drawers to that opening.

http://www.collectingsnapon.com/catalogs/catalogs.php?loggedin=0&catalogPage=2034

4.) Do all the drawers work good? Are they rusted out? Dented? Sheet metal that doesn't line up? Do you have the keys? All of these are factors that go into the ultimate value of a box.

5.) Realize that the market for those boxes is pretty limited to home DIY guys and collectors. Working pro's typically want a larger box with ball bearings slides. Likewise most home folks want a box that is ready to use especially if they are paying a few $100 for it. That leaves the collectors (not likely on craigs list) and the buy it cheap, fix it up crowd.

In my local market Mid west, US as they appear in the images. You would be looking at ~$75 quick sale, ~$100-120 reasonable time frame, maybe a few weeks. $200+ and you will be waiting for a while, if at all for someone to purchase them.

Hope this helps.

They're close to being "a pile of ****" judging by those pictures. They're covered in overspray & assorted paint, bondo & ****. I think you need to re-evaluate your definition of VGC.
I think he could probably sell them for about $10.......... to Stevie Wonder.

What the others said: NOT VGC, and not likely to clean up to that state, and no, "VGC for their age" is NOT a condition qualifier that gets anything but a belly laugh, so don't go there.

There appears to be serious rust near the bottom of the top, and in several other places. MAYBE its grease buildup but all that other **** is not going to just wipe off. You have probably two days of hard work to get the worst off and then you might be able to judge their condition. I'm more optimistic than most on here and have resurrected several wasted boxes, but I got them for nothing or close to it...

I note someone has tagged this thread with the term "antique" no such thing. 1967 is vintage at best. Sorry but "antique" in this case is delusional.

I guess when I said "VGC" I was way off. I'm just a friend, trying to help out a buddy. I have to go look at bottom space cover and see about that. It is REALLY dirty and hope to get it cleaned up asap. He is disabled, so I am on my own. All the drawers work great, no dents (tiny dings in paint etc from regular use). I thought I saw a very small line of rust at the bottom of the bottom cabinet, but only about 1" long, 1/8" high. No other rust that I could see. I'm a fairly smart woman, but not real knowledgeable in tool chests.
To clean it I thought about spraying with degreaser, scrubbing, rinse, use Dawn Extra grease removal dish soap, scrub and dry. Just wanted to make sure I don't mess it up. Thanks to all those who were so helpful, and to the rest of you, "Hey, Don't kill the messenger!"

I see in the pics that where the paint is gone appears rust colored, but what I saw mostly is grease/dirt buildup and where the paint is missing, just needs a little primer, no rust holes. My husband is sick today, but heading over there to work on it now.

A good wash will give us more idea of what they are like, but if that's overspray & doesn't wash off it's going to need clay bar treatment at best... altho #0000 steelwool may/should work wonders after it's been washed.

Agree with Outlaw; cleaning up those boxes is huge grunt work. BTDTNA.

When they're sorta clean, post some good photos taken with a real camera and you'll get a pretty close estimate as to the market price.

This pair are both from 1967 and I paid 500. I think I did good and I'm just using this as a comparison for what you have in front of you.

This was from the 70's and spent its life in a body shop. I spent 3 months of spare time. New locks, slides and a trip to the powder coaters to get it like this. It started out close to what your box looked like. Lots of sweat but I really like my SO Taco cart.

FJ342 & beemerguy :drool::drool::drool::beer: Beautiful boxes.

Jules, don't take it personally. While I do think one of the responses was a bit off, don't worry about it.

Lets go at this from a different angle. What were you kinda expecting to get out of the boxes? You had to have some ballpark figure in mind before posting here, what was that figure? Have fun cleaning those old boxes. If you do use water, make sure you get them to dry out real good before reassembly or placing them in storage. Otherwise rust issues my result.
