I have an air compressor from 1968 with a 3hp motor 1725rpm single phase. It's blowing a fuse on one leg of the 220 circuit I have it connected to. The motor has a contacter at the opposite end from the pully. I've been an electrician for 15 yrs, I haven't come across this before. So if anyone out there can hook me up with the specs, wiring diagram, and the theory for this tech, I would appreciate it.....JAY

A bit too advanced for me, but I'm sure you'll solve this somehow, sounds weird.

Hi Op!
Have you solved the problem? Would be interesting to hear what caused this.

If it's a standard type motor I'm another vote for the start/run capacitor. If it has a magnetic starter (which I doubt) I'd say one of the heaters is faulted.

Check the windings and make sure they are isolated from Ground. If, not disconnect the starting cap and see it if that isolates the windings. If it does not you have a bad motor. If it does you have a Bad cap.

Is the contactor a centrifugal switch? If so you have starting windings that are removed when rpm is reached. Maybe not functioning?
