Did Craftsman ratchets of this time period come with grease in them? If so, what was the point of the oil port on the top of the ratchet head?

I recently disassembled a used craftsman 1/2" ratchet from the late 1970's and found crusted orange-colored grease on the pawl and the main gear. I try to take into account what the original factory lube was before I re-lube (along with tooth size and tooth wear). I've already used Superlube on some of my ratchets and motor oil on others.

The "oil port" is just a hole left from factory drilling the cavity where the spring and ball bearing go.
