I have a neighbor with a 1971 Ford 550 backhoe that is having issues with the fuel pump timing. Does anyone have experience with one of these? Any pointers on getting the thing timed right?

Not sure, but I think Ford used CAV / Lucas pumps on the Basildon built Diesel in those backhoes.

Do a search. There should be thrads or videos out there.

Be prepared to buy a reman pump though. It’s a 52 year old macnine.

Some of those old engines had timing advance mechanisms operated by fuel pressure, so fresh filters might be a place to start.

The 550 has a three cylinder Ford Diesel, and the online search sites confirm it has a Lucas / CAV fuel system.

Broken Tractor, among other places, has fuel system parts.

Timing doesn’t normally change with Diesel engines, unless something is worn or broken, or, like I said, the filters are plugged or the supply pressure is otherwise low from a damaged lift pump, etc.

Did he have the pump off for some reason?
The pump should be the same as a 555 if I remember correctly the front gear is keyed and the timing marks are stamped on the front engine cover with a line on the pump to line up>

Or someone took it apart and mixed up/lost the shims.

It might be a 256D. I am doing the cylinder head for one right now and I think my customer has the service manual. Get the engine model and serial number off the plate and I will see what he has.

When speaking of 550 , I was speaking of F550 , road trucks with backhoe mounted to rear of bed . Sorry for confusion
