1976 Sears craftsman air compressor paint sprayer

Hello everyone. I am new to this site. Was wondering if anyone could help me out. I just inherited a older compressor paint sprayer. I plug it in and it builds pressure to about 50 lbs and just runs. It will not get any higher and doesnt seem to be leaking anywhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Pictures would be helpful. Is it a spray-only unit, or does it have a tank with it.

My dad had one that was only good for use as a paint sprayer.
Is had a pressure relief valve and no tank on it.

We used to use it to air up bicycle tires but beyond that and spraying paint it was worthless

If I recall they built a sprayer only compressor which ran to about 50PSI only for running spray guns, it was not a standard duty air compressor. However, if should still turn off after it builds up pressure I believe. So the shut off mechanism isn't working.

I also have a sears compressor from around that time period. It has a tank and uses a two HP electric motor, also says its for painting. I have had to clean/replace the intake reed valves as they get warped and or cracked over time or could get grit under them if the filter is missing. Fixing this will require removal of a plate on the top of the cylinder head. It has just a couple of fasteners holding the plate/cover in place and is not the whole top of the head. I am not saying this is the problem but it very well could be especially if it builds pressures slower than it used to.

Hello everybody.l am sorry i didnt get back to my post faster.it does have a tank but i figured it out. The one reed was being held open by a piece of old gasket. I pulled it apart and seen it right away. I want to thank everyone who responded. I think the garage journal will be a blessing in the future. Everyone is very helpful and fast responding. Thanx
