I’m working on fixing up a Champion HR5-8.
The finned copper intercooler was basically toast. The fins were crumbling.

Looks like it’s 3/4 compression going into the manifold, would it be feasible to just use some 3/4” copper either with or without an aftercooler piped inline?

I had ordered a stock aftercooler from shopcompressors.com, but as it’s 10 days later and it hasn’t shipped yet. I’m kinda itching to use the compressor.

Picture is the condition of when I got it. Since then, I redid the top end and then some (polished valves, new gaskets, cleaned up the minuscule fowling on Hp piston, took flapper to cylinder bores, new copper lines to unloader, cleaned crankcase, filled with fresh oil, checked crank end play etc.), removed 3ph 5hp reliance motor and swapped it with a single phase 5hp baldor with new caps and good windings.

So as you can see after all that I’m dying to use it lol. And I need to pull the old 1971 Saylor Beall 705 to start its overhaul.

I don recall exactly, but I think my Champion “ intercooler” is just a soft copper tube with a stack of thin copper fins with a hole piercing the metal so it’s snug on the tube od.
