Most air conditioners I've seen blow cold air out the front, and hot air out the back, where does the hot air go in these units???

8000 btu should do it... I cool 1100 sq ft with 12K of cooling with a 1966 Fedders.

Just remember these low priced a/c units are pretty much Chinese sourced. I have a Haier that still works after 4 years... but not very well.

One hose or two? The one hose vents the hot air outside, but air has to leak in elsewhere to make up for it. All other things being equal, two hose portable A/Cs should be more effective than one hose.

we've been happy with our soleus dehumidifier for the past couple of years. Chugs away quitely and does its job like it is supposed to.

Do not forget these units are like dehumidifiers they need to be emptied of water frequently.

I was going to get a unit this summer for my basement after last season until I was laid off. My idea was that a dehumidifier add heat to the basement which in turn rises thou to the next floors. Keep the basement real cool and the rest of the window AC units will not have to work as hard.

don't get a portable it won't do squat to cool your garage. I bought a 12k btu unit that has two vents, intake and exhaust and they are vented to the outside and it still doesn't cool the garage. it works good for spot cooling if you're standing right infornt of it but that's about it. it' won't drop the ambient temperature. that was a total waste of money, and it was an expensive one around $700.
