Hello,

My sister's car's transmission just went out and my Dad (diesel mechanic/truck driver) is considering replacing it. He is wondering if there are any special tools or difficulties to this job. Basically, if anybody had time to give a quick bullet point summary of the steps required it would help a lot.

Thanks.

More of a pain if it's AWD as the transfer case has to come out, though it's only five bolts. Should be very straight forward... just need an assortment of metric sockets.

I believe it is 2wd. My Dad was saying that it looked straightforward, but it never hurts to double check, does it?

make a trip to your local Libary or freindly auto shop that has "ALLDATA", it will give you everything you need to know about doing the swap. It is an online service that Mech. use it will list procedures and pictues as well. Many libaries have it for free use or you may have to slip the mech a few bucks!

krusty just summed up the haynes manual. its good for the torque specs but as far as procedures it's next to worthless. just my 2c, I'd go with the chilton.

I just did mine, 94 eclipse. pretty straight forward, no real special tools required. pay attention to torque specs. while he is there, replace the main seal from the motor unless it has been done recently. the bolts from the flywheel plate are special, dont loose them. I took mine out from the bottom, raised the car and used a jack to drop it. kind of a 2 person job.
