After lurking on GJ for a while and getting ideas from you all,I am FINALLY spending some time and money to build my small garage (19ft x19ft) the way I want.

Here is a little back story. The wife and I bought the house a year and a half ago. The apartment we were renting was going to be sold and we had to scramble to find a new place to live, thus we threw everything in boxes and we were able to find this awesome house just at the right time. In our rush to move out in time we made a mess of packing and have been trying to get organized since we moved in. The problem is we have a 2 1/2 year old son who is a dare devil and to be honest, I like hangin with him and my wife more than going through old boxes of "stuff" in my garage. So the garage became a nightmare over time. I had the ideas but not the time or the money to get what I wanted in my garage.

The money came in the form of heartbreak. My beloved 2004 Silverado SS was stolen 1 week before Christmas 2016. I have a company vehicle so I didnt drive it much but it still was my dream truck and my son loved it because it was fast and loud. Insurance paid me out within a month and I had no plans of replacing it until I had an garage that I could work in.

That gets me to where I am today. My wife is awesome and she wants me to do whatever I want with the garage. Little did she know what she was getting herself into.

I am going with Custom Garages Inc in Pacheco, CA for the cabinets. Gary and his crew have been awesome to deal with and the prices are super reasonable. For the floor I am going with Swisstrax - Ribtrax. I recived a sample of both RD and Swisstrax. Both are awesome options but I liked the construction of the Swisstrax more. Cabinets go in next week and the floor is being delivered this week.

I spent all weekend cleaning and organizing. I am removing everything, or as much as I can remove, to start with a clean slate. Tomorrow I start with patching and painting the walls. Before 1.jpg

First thing I would do is enlarge the garage. I have a 19x19 garage and curse my builder every day. You can't make a smaller two car garage. If you can extend the length to 24 feet you will be well rewarded.

 The POs of our house proved that false... They built an "18x20" garage that measures 17x19 inside. The exterior foundation is barely 18x20...

04Blkss, sorry to read about your truck being stolen, that *****!

I wish I could extend the garage but we need a laundry room and a kitchen so I don't think my wife will sign off on the garage taking over these spaces. My wife is awesome but this might be a breaking point for her. I want/need a bass boat and it is so hard to find one that is 19ft on a trailer.

Update

Been working on the garage all week and I finally have it 90% cleared out. The walls are HORRIBLE as you can see in the photos. Cabinets come in on Monday so I need to hustle to get the walls and ceiling patched, taped, primed and painted. My buddy is an electrician and he will be running some new outlets for my beer fridge, work bench, TV and welder tomorrow along with some LED can lights and a ceiling fan. Hard to believe that this garage was built with only 2 outlets and a single light bulb on the ceiling. I have plumber coming in tomorrow as well to get the old broken water softener out. I also got my tracking info on my Swisstrax and it will be delivered tomorrow as well. Thankfully it is being delivered to my work so it can be stored until the cabinets are done and wont be taking up valuable floor space on the pallet. This is going to be a mad scramble to get as much done before Monday.

BoliermakerFan - Thanks. The worst part about the truck is the Officer who came out to make the report accused me of insurance fraud. His exact quote was "it's fishy that a 13 year old truck gets stolen a week before Christmas. Is there something you want to tell me?" After I had a calm explanation with him about my love for my truck he asked me the value of the truck. I said probably $12k to $15k. He put $8k on the report which was fun to explain to the insurance company. Water under the bridge now. GOD I miss that truck.

Man, that is salt in the wound! Did you file a complaint or would that lead to possible "repercussions"?

I have a friend of a friend who works with this officer. I explained what happened and she said that he must of had a bad day because that didn't sound like him. I got a fair payment from insurance so I left it alone.

Can't wait to see this space transformed! I feel your pain on the size - mine is 17x19x8 inside :( But hey, I'm a homeowner now and I have my own garage so this is a HUGE upgrade and milestone - as I imagine it is for you - congrats!

I also had the old broken water softener removed this morning as well. Electrician will be working on wiring tomorrow and myself and a buddy will be taping and patching the walls on Friday and Saturday.
