A lot can be done with a small compressor. My first compressor was a 4 gallon Jenny/Emglo/DeWalt roofing type compressor. It ran my IR231 1/2" impact without trouble (ie, I never needed a burst longer than the tank could sustain). However, it was sometimes frustrating with an air gun and useless with my die grinder. Because the option came up I upgraded to a CH similar to the Sanborn I linked to above. For the work I've been doing, no issues. However, I would like to get a bigger compressor for a small blast cabinet... if I can get the garage space... one day.

ive used my little porter pancake compressor all last winter when my regular compressor took a dump last fall, blowing up tires, and zipping lug nuts off.

even my "big" compressor is an old CM horizontal oil less...

i guess working in const eq shops, listening to loud noise all day has made me more "tolerant" to noise....

I have the 200psi upright dewalt 15 gal (higher psi = roughly equivalent to a 25 gal). I can't use a cut-off for more than 10 sec, but my die grinder works well. But it was $370.

For $200-250, I'd get this: http://www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/rolair-compressor-jc10

It'd be fine for nailers and impacts (I think! on that last one).

Unbelievably quiet. Like, I almost can't hear it. Amaze-balls!

That's the same pump California Air Tools uses on their lower powered models like the 5510se. Very quiet but limited flow. They cost less than the Rolair version.

Yeah, that Dewalt is nice!

Just to give you an idea, I rotated my tires the other day, using a 1/2 impact, and the compressor didn't kick on until removing the 4th wheel (6 lugs). Had the regulator set on 110 or 115 with a 50ft hose. Had no issues or slowdowns really. I haven't tried a sander since that's probably going to be futile, but I have a nice Bosch orbital anyway. This is with the Husky 30gal quiet(er) compressor. I do like the dual quick connects, but I've found that I never really use both at the same time. I wouldn't call it quiet, but its much more tolerable than my pancake compressor.

eta: relocating the water drain valve is a must, it's in a crappy spot.

I was just look at the California model you mentioned, but am now curious about the Rolair. The weight of the Rolair looks portable enough to be trunk friendly too if the need arises.

Not one review below 5 stars is either outstanding or fishy, lol

Take a look at the aluminum tank CAT 5510A. It's about 35lb. Not compact but light. Do keep the lower air flow in mind when considering these vs more traditional pumps. They are very quiet but I'm not sure what their rated duty cycle is. They are also down on cfm vs most other compressors.
