Hi, I need some help/suggestions for my garage. The builder decided that he could just paint the garage floor and it would be the same as Epoxy. Whoops, it started to peel in about 2-3 years, since that time I had vinyl/rubber ridge mats for the cars but after 9-10 years it started to fold and become a hazard to us old folks!

I'd love an epoxy floor, but to try and remove everything from the garage then scrape or diamond ? the paint, then acid wash it then apply lots of coats of epoxy seems beyond our capabilities. Quotes are expensive not including moving/storing stuff.

I've looked at tiles but the best may be pretty hard for 70 year olds to place and I don't want to do it more than once.

Thoughts as to what I should use and what is most cost effective and least expensive?

The vendors here are great at helping out with suggestions. But most likely a grind will be the quickest way to prep for the next coating.

Hello Dave and welcome! Glad you found us, hopefully one of us here can help you. A couple things I'd like address...

What type of epoxy floor are you looking to do?
Are you looking for a solid opaque color? Would you want something with decorative flake or quartz? Are you interested in slip resistance? What type of abuse will the floor generally see?

How many sq ft?

I assume you can be out of your garage for a week or two?

In my opinion your best option would be to grind the concrete. This will remove the old coating, remove contaminants, and open up the concrete to allow coatings. It's definitely not the cheapest option, but it is the correct one. Concrete coatings are all about surface preparation, and skimping here could leave you very unhappy down the road.

You would not have to acid wash after grinding as grinding is a superior method of surface prep..
