I had a 24x30 pole barn garage at my last house and loved it, but hated the house. We moved into a much nicer house in 2006 with a standard 2-car attached garage and bonus room. The garage is very nice, but not big enough to really work in. I am a gearhead and always have some sort of automotive project going. I have a '66 Mustang GT 2+2, a 2011 Audi S4, and a 1988 Chevy K1500. My wife has a 2009 Infiniti G37 as well. I do all the maintenance, detailing, repairs, etc on them.

The tornados that ripped through Alabama in April also hit here. My in-laws home was completely destroyed and they lost everything, including my father-in-laws's life. My mother-in-law is still recovering and will be living with us. She just purchased a 2012 Ford Focus to replace their three vehicles that were totaled. We have plenty of living space, but not enough storage or parking.

We decided to build a 24x32x10 pole barn (but sided and shingled to match th house) with attic trusses over one side and steps on the outside to access it. The other bay will have scissor trusses to allow my dream tool, a 4-post lift. All the builders around here are swamped because of storm rebuilding. We are meeting with an out-of-town builder tomorrow to nail everything down.

I would like to have a utility sink, but will have to dig up my deck to run the water line and drain. That is work and expense I don't want to tackle right now. What options are there for plumbing a pole barn later? Should I at least stick a capped line and drain in before the pour? I guess I could mark it for connection later?

I read horror stories about permits and inspections on here. We must be lucky because ours have been very helpful so far. This is a pretty rural area though.

I know you want pics! I'll get some tomorrow after we get everything laid out. Any other tips, tricks, or suggestions?

We met with the builder this morning. We will be using CB Structures for the build. It will look similar to this:

I have to get a tree removed and some light excavating done first. Hoping to start in early-August. I will start a new thread in the gallery forum once we get going with some pictures.

I would plot out where you'd want the sink, then place piping there as needed. Just make sure it's down according to your juristriction requirements. Run 'em out 4-6 feet and cap the ends. They'll wait for you to come find them later.

I'm sorry to hear about your in-laws' loss. I wish your family the best in their healing. :( It sounds like they have a good son and husband to lean on. :)

Did you consider a 26' depth? I'm wrestling with a depth decision also. I'd like it to be as short as possible—for aesthetic and siting reasons—but I'd also like to allow for garaging and working on a pickup truck in the future. Most trucks I'd be interested in are just over 19' long. After deducting for the walls, 26' leaves a little less than three three feet front and rear for working and walking around clearance. If a truck or large SUV isn't in your future, never mind. :D

Regards,

Stewart

I considered going deeper, but it wouldn't look right aesthetically with our house, deck, and existing garage.
