Hi everyone

I've been lurking for a long time, figured it was time I say hello.

I've been looking for a small vise for a while now. The other day I came across what was being advertised as a "Cleveland" on CL for $60. It was in town so I drove over in a snow storm and grabbed it for $50. Turns out its a Columbian 644. Does anyone have any info on this model and did I get a decent deal?

Thanks
Paul

Welcome to the posting side of the fence!

You will get your monies worth out of it.

I like to throw a small rag over the exposed threads if I'm filing or grinding on something clamped up in the vise - keeps the shavings off.

Thanks, I thought it was a nice find. Good advice about the threads!

I'd have to go outside to take measurements, and its way to cold right now for that, but I'd say the jaw is about 5" wide and the whole vice is probably 16-18" long.

thanks for sharing. also that is a very clean vise. i'm betting it is a 4 inch wide jaw when you do venture out in the cold, but it might be bigger.

great tip about the rag over the open screw. the ones I own are all enclosed that I use, but I have a few to restore that are similar to this Columbian i'm going to sell or give as gifts and i'll mention that to the new owners. also probably a good idea to put a rag over the ones with the screws encased so you don't have metal and wood shavings getting inside the static jaw.

looks like all you need to do is put a little grease on the screw and mount it on your bench.
